What to call these prints
2004-08-03 by Olaf Ringdahl
This question is extremely important to most of us on this list but I think the final answer will come, not from us, but from the museum curators and conservators and the directors of the top end commercial galleries. I favor "inkjet print." That is what it is. Everyone knows it. My feeling is that to call it anything else - carbon print, pigment print, giclee or whatever - is pretentious and maybe deliberately deceptive. But my opinion doesn't matter. The inkjet print will be called something by the top dealers and curators and that will be your answer. To pursue the question I would suggest visiting the websites of the top galleries to see what they call them. I have never seen an inkjet print, by any name, offered by a top gallery, but I have not made a serious effort to find inkjet prints on offer. (I have seen some excellent inkjet work in minor galleries, but they were not in a position to influence the ultimate naming of the medium.) If anyone does investigate I would very much like to hear the results. Olaf [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
