RE: [Digital BW] Solved! Re: Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Question

2004-08-11 by Richard Wolfson

I have not tried this -- and I'm not sure how Roy's software is
interacting with networking -- so what follows is speculation:

To set up your "one computer network" it may be necessary to plug the
Ethernet port in your computer (assuming there is one...) into a hub
with a short cat 5 network cable. Otherwise, Windows may not be able to
configure local networking. If your only network device is your phone
connection ("dial-up adapter" in windows jargon) the networking
configuration Roy's software needs may vanish each time you disconnect
your dial-up connection.

Has anyone tried Richard's suggestion with success? That is, using
the Win Network Wizard to configure a one computer network, then
adding the cable from the the Ethernet port to a hub. Its a cheap
solution if it works.

Actually all that is required is to add a loopback adapter with a
localhost address. I can build a doc that demonstrates this if
demand is there.

I'd appreciate this, then I can pass it on to people who can't get
QTRgui/QuadToneRIP to work because of no Shared Printer.

[Digital BW] Solved! Re: Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Question

2004-08-17 by Roy Harrington

A number of people would benefit from this loopback feature.

This is the microsoft link describing the setup -- use manual installation.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=236869

Since my system has the network I don't know if there are any stumbling
blocks in getting this to work.

I'd be glad to include anyone's description of the whole process in the info.
Posting it here first would be helpful to most.

BTW, I'll be out of town for the rest of the week so replies will be delayed.
Thanks,
Roy

[Digital BW] Solved! Re: Quadtone RIP for WinXP: "Some level of networking" Qu

2004-08-17 by njfranknj

I just followed the directions and it worked! I've been having
problems all day with some kind of network error, despite having torn
out, downloaded and reinstalled QTR3 for Windows. Now my file is
actually sent to the printer and I'm back where I was before the
network erupted - I get 1/4 of the image centered near where the whole
image should have appeared!

Well, one thing at a time, I guess. Now Roy's going away, so I'll get
a break from this headache, but it sure would be nice to have someone
to bitch at right now.

Anyway, thanks, Roy! Have a good whatever. BTW, changing the canvas
size of my image to make it smaller than the Epson's maximum had no
effect.

Or, for Windows XP specifically:

(I didn't check to see what, if any, differences there are).

2004-08-17 by Roy Harrington

Hi Frank,

I'll give you one more shot before I leave.
If you are getting 1/4 of the image, I'm pretty sure what's happening is
the program is seeing too big an image than it thinks fits on a page
and chopping it up in tiles. You'd probably get 4 pages output if
there's paper in the feeder.

I think using PS to position as well as QTR to position is causing confusion.
QTR doesn't know that you have a bunch of white around the image.
I think you'll have the easiest success if you just trim off all the extra white.
Then the default is to just center the image on the paper. If you want
custom positioning then use the margin variables TOP and LEFT to specify
the top left corner. It's very much like the Epson driver positioning.

You sure you made it small enough? I had exactly this problem when I was
