Dye or Pigment ink for my 1160

John,

I assume you are interested in bw inksets, right? The only dye inkset
available for bw is Lyson's. Everything else is pigment. So your choices
are pretty narrow and depend on what you need to print. Dye inks
do well on glossy media, pigments do best on matte ("watercolor").

The 1160 was designed to be used with dyes. Pigments will work on it
too, but may not get all the black density that an inkset is capable of.
However, most people, myself included, have used it with pigments
very successfully. The two most popular inksets for it are the MIS inks
and the Piezotones. You would do well with either, assuming you pick
a good driver or "workflow" method.

Here are two choices:

The Ultratone b&w inkset. Four tones to choose from the same inkset:
Cool, neutral (Selenium), Warm and Sepia. Use with the free Paul
Roark's printing curves. (Photoshop or Picture Window Pro)

The Ultratone FS or FSN b&w inkset.
Your choice of neutral or medium warm inkset.

The above set requires the use of the R9 or PiezographyBW driver.

I have curves that allow the 1160 to make excellent prints with the MIS
UT-FS inksets without having to buy any software other than Photoshop or
Picture Window. In fact, the UT-FS inkset prints nicely but slightly light
with no curves or special software at all.

With Photo Black loaded in the printer, the 1160 with the UT-FS inksets can
also print on glossy paper.

Paul,

There's no mention of your curves for the FS inkset on the MIS site.
In fact, I was under the impression that it was either R9 or anything
one can do with the Epson driver.

Nice to know.

It was true that MIS had no hextone UT-FS option until I decided to support
the CMCMY ink order. Now the 1280 curves are done, and the 1270 curves for
matte papers are done for that ink arrangement. These are on my webpage and
will probably be on the MIS website soon.

For quadtone printers, however, there have always been curves to print them
without the Piezo or R9 drivers. In fact, that is how I got started with
this. I made curves to print my Piezo inks with the Epson driver.

See the MIS webpage at
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/qn.html.
Note that there is a chart on the left for 4-Color printers. The chart on
the right is for 6 Color desktop printers. That is where the MIS webpage
reflects the lack of support and will need to be updated.
