TIFF vs. Photoshop format?

TIFF vs. Photoshop format?

2004-10-21 by peterzakos

When using photoshop CS, in what format should I edit and save high
bit, multilayered image files; TIFF or photoshop? Is there a
difference in file size, speed/efficiency? I realize that this may
be a bit off-topic for this forum but I would much appreciate your
opinions. Mine is a 'closed-loop' system where I do all of the B&W
scanning and printing.
Thanks, Peter.

I would suggest TIFF LZW compressed. Even though you use a "closed
loop" theory you can give this file type to just about anyone and they
can open it with the simplest application.

Re: TIFF vs. Photoshop format?

2004-10-22 by Bob Michaels

I suggest always saving Unflattened PSD files. Disk space is dirt
cheap and you never know when you want to go back and tweak a file.
Once you save it as a TIF and close the original PSD file, that option
is gone forever.

It only takes seconds to flatten and sharpen a fle for printing then
close the file without saving. And just starting over one time to
change a file takes way more time that you could ever save.

I also suggest saving the original scan file as a TIF. Like I said,
disk space is cheap and it's nice not to ever have to rescan.

Doesn't LZW compresson actually corrupt data in the extremes by throwing pixels away to
reduce file size?
Layerd Tiffs do take up a lot of space but I didn't know there was anyway around that.

LZW is lossless. I have been using it for years.
