Digital BW, The Print

For example, I have a Canon i860. Canon doesn't have a Black Only (BO)
option like Epson driver offers. So when I print a grayscale photo it
will use color ink dots to make a final (seems) BW print. Obvious it
is not true BW. 

Is it possible to modify transfer function in Canon's driver to
instruct the printer not to use color inks? 

If transfer functions does not do this what else can achieve a real BO
in a printer that has no BO option? 

Anywhere in the web or any book has a good tutorial about transfer
function?
