unfixable blockage in 1520 - first since 1997

unfixable blockage in 1520 - first since 1997

2004-10-25 by Lynn

Hello again all,

I wrote in the other day asking for thoughts on the usage of an Epson
1520 printer for B&W. Although I received no reply to my query, I
thought I should report in that my question is probably now mute. For
the first time since I bought it new in 1997 I have a blockage in the
black that I can not clear no matter what. I have tried special head
cleaning cartridges, my old faithful trick of tape head cleaning
solution ... and also tried rubbing alcohol and then later some windex.
Of course, I tried cleaning via the utility on the computer too.
Nothing I do will make all of the lines appear on the black test. Only
some appear. The CMY cartridge is fine. Does this mean my 1520 has
finally died? Is the only recourse to take it out and give it a burial?

Thanks for any advice,
-Lynn

My rather old Epson 860 presented similar "unfixable" problems. With
the service manual and service program in hand, I removed the print
head. Soaking overnight in mixture of alcohol and windex and then
pressuring the mix thru the head with a syringe cleared the
blockage. It's quite a procedure but very satisfying to know I can
keep the printer working perfectly.

I hadn't realized that would be an option. What a neat idea.

I guess I'll have to contact epson to see how to get the service manual
and service program you mention.

Thanks very much for the idea! Nothing to lose at this point.

Epson won't provide what you need but this site will for about $20.

If you're up to doing that much, and it doesn't work, I had a black
print head die on my 3000, then it's not much more to fit a replacement,
a small program to run to program the different print head voltage in
the machine and some alignment tests.

I have a copy of the program here which I'm pretty sure works for the
1520 as well and a copy of the service manual as a PDF.

Hi-

You mentioned that you have a copy of the head voltage program and
the manual for the 1520. Can you post it and send a link to it?
