introduction

2004-10-27 by Dean

Hello.

I have just joined this group, and would like to introduce myself.

My name is Dean Johnston. I am from New Zealand and I now live in Japan.

Up until now I have only made darkroom B&W prints, and only RC ones at
that. Mostly I use and print from 35mm film, although I do have a 6x6
camera which I use and print from occasionally.

My primary interest is in B&W photographs, however I am using colour a
little more lately. This has prompted me to explore the purchase of a
film scanner and an inkjet printer, as I wanted to control the colour
process. Originally I had planned to continue with B&W in the darkroom only.

However, after reading a little on the web I have decided to give B&W
inkjet printing a try too, as it seems that now it is indeed possible to
get very good (or maybe even amazing) results in B&W. Probably I will
just concentrate on black only printing at first. This will allow me to
also do the colour work I want to do.

I'd like to thank Clayton Jones for his very informative article on BO
printing, which not only got me started on this course but also lead me
to this group.

Funds are low at the moment, but next month (fingers crossed) I hope to
be able to purchase a scanner and printer. I am aiming at the Konica
Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 at the moment, as it seems to be offering
the most bang for bucks, as it were. I have read some very favourable
reports from users of this scanner.

The printer I think I will get is the Epson PM-400PX, otherwise known as
the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 outside of Japan. It has been heavily
discounted here in Japan with the impending release of the PX-G5000 next
month. Around US$422 now.

Any advise/warnings on this hardware would be welcome, especially from
anyone who has used the Epson PM-400PX with the English language driver
downloaded from the US site.

Thanks.
