Neutral BW Ultratones via duotones

Neutral BW Ultratones via duotones

2004-11-11 by Richard Smallfield

Hello,
I've just bought a 2100 and did an experiment: I loaded the warmest of the Photoshop Pantone Quadtones in order to hopefully eliminate the blue cast I was getting, when printing in colour and ... it worked!

If I go outside I can see a shade of blue/green, but inside it looks totally neutral under tungsten lighting. Even under my full-spectrum fluorescent light source it's acceptable.

Anyone else tried this?

Richard

Hi Richard,
Could you explain in a bit more detail what you did?

Thanks

Jules

Hi,
I took an 8bit Greyscale image and converted to Duotone. Then I loaded Quadtone Pantone # B541 513 5773.ado .

I sometimes use this on my HP 7660 to warm up a print and it's my fave duo/quadtone. Because the Epson prints with a blue bias when printing BW in colour, however, this warming quadtone seems to counteract the cool blue colour cast quite well.

I'd appreciate anyone else's thoughts,
Richard

Hi,
I just printed a sheet of business cards using this technique and there's still a green cast - but not as bad as the blue I was getting before. I guess I'll be sticking to Black Only or QTR (when I have a PC capable of running XP - mine's only a Celeron 600).

Sorry to have raised your hopes,
Richard

It's really just an illusion as the printer isn't really printing quadtone or only certain ink
channels. The printer is using all inks for a toned look - which can hide color shifting a
little better than a neutral print.
