Need to replace CIS

Need to replace CIS

2004-11-17 by Andre

Hi,

After 4 years of service my CIS system from NoMoreCarts needs to be
replaced. I've been looking at the CFS system from MIS and wonder if I
should go with that or stay with Nomorecarts which has been trouble
free, except for the Velcro fastener. I'll also be switching from the
UT inkset to the UT-FS inkset.

Is the MIS 1160 CFS vacuum filled ? There is contradictory info on
the MIS site.

Also, while I'm at it, anyone refilling carts (without a CFS) on the
1160 or is it just too much of a hassle.

Your input will be much appreciated.

TIA,
Andre

I had an 860 for several years and did some cartridge refilling for it -
tried out several MIS B&W inks. Those cartridges, which are the same as
the 1160 uses, were a royal pain to refill, compared to the other
(Canon) cartridges that I've been refilling for just as long. Some of
the new Epson (e.g., C84) cartridges are as simple and hassle free as
the Canon cartridges (except for resetting the chips, which only takes a
few seconds) where you just pop out a rubber plug and refill the
reservoir. But the old ones, where you had to suck out a load of foamy
ink before refilling, were almost more trouble than they were worth (to
me, anyway.)

If I still had the 860 and wanted to use it on a regular basis I
certainly would have looked at a CFS for it rather than try to refill
cartridges. Instead, I got the C84 and a CFS with the MIS EZ inks -
what a dream setup, if you don't need variable tone control.

Cheers,
Kip

Andre, I had the same thing happen to my nomorecarts 1160. I got what
I needed to rehab it(carts/tubes) from www.inksupply.com and
everything worked great. MIS sent instructions. I still had the
syringe from my original order and the installation was just about
like the first time. Essentially, I just replaced the tubing and the
carts. Much cheaper than a whole new setup. I think I like their
tubing better than what I had. It is more rigid.

Both of mine, also on 1160s, seem to still be ok, also after about
four years, but I've filled up the bottles only a few times.

I think I'd stay with NoMoreCarts, but simply because it's been
trouble-free, and not because I know of anything wrong with the MIS
CFS; I don't.

I don't know.

I never have.

Good luck, Andre, and whatever you decide to do, please post about
your experience. Thanks.

Thanks for the info Linda. I've queried MIS for the replacement parts
of my NomoreCarts CIS. That may be the solution and the least costly
at that.

The cost of replacement of carts & tubing on an Epson 1160 would be
something like $35.00 making it feasable to replace carts and tubing
every 12 month or so for a trouble free system.

Also thanks to all others who have replied. Much appreciated.

Andre, here are the parts I ordered, FYI

CFC-1160-E $35.00
MIS-SWTACT $.10 cents (These are the foam pieces you use to reset
carts. I don't recall if they come with the CFC but I wanted extras
on hand as I've had trouble with them wearing out in the past)

Best of luck.

Linda,

Thanks for the parts number. This is probably what I'll be ordering.
When you re-installed the CIS, did you use the vacuum method or did
you bottom fill the carts ?

TIA

Andre, I used the vacuum fill method. I still had the syringe from my
original NMC purchase and used that. I just looked the instructions
MIS sent with the kit and they are only for vacuum filling. If you do
not still have your syringe, you'll have to get one. I did see them
bottom fill notes on the MIS website but not being particularly
adventuresome in such matters I wasn't comfortable with the process &
chose to go with what I know.

Strange that the vendors of these systems don't offer a rebuild kit,
like you say, a kit for $35 with all the needed parts, would probably
get purchased a lot more often then a whole system. Now if only someone
would make one of these systems for my HP....... All you would need is
a cartridge with more long-term heads, the rest would be the same as the
  Epsons, maybe?

What would be nice is a system built into the printer, so you just need
to replace the ink bottles......

Thanks Linda. I wasn't sure which was the preffered MIS method, but I
do prefer the vacuum fill method since that's what I originally used
for the NoMoreCarts CIS and subsequent cartridge replacements.

I have used refill kits on another printer and decided not again,
currently I use 3rd party refurb cartridges, but if I want to use more
interesting inks and save some serious coin I guess I will need to look
into something.

The problem is that MIS in in the United states, and I am not. So I
need to know if there is anything similar available locally.
