Digital BW, The Print

Running win XP pro - all installed fine.
No problems on my first print onto EEM, lovely.

Then I start having problems.

Trying to print onto A4 manually loaded sheets of Premium Glossy, I 
get a horribly (definately wrong) grainy image "stretched" over what 
could be a Landscape A4 (paper was set to Portrait and Image was 
Portrait).  Fit should have been fine.

Then I try to print back onto a roll again, this time premium semi-
matt.  Scale is fine this time, but the print stalls halfway through 
and my processor goes through the roof (my temperature alarm came on 
at 70degC!! after the QTR raster had been running the processor at 
100% for 5 mins solid).

Any ideas... I'm stuck.

Printer is firewire connected and shared.
