Eboni Black vs. Ultrachrome MK

Eboni Black vs. Ultrachrome MK

2004-12-16 by Michael Gordon

I print with an Epson 7600 using QTR. I'm hoping to sometime soon
acquire a second printer for my color work, thus allowing me to
convert my 7600 to a dedicated b/w printer with the UT7 inkset. In
the meantime, I swap back and forth between Epson PK and MK. Is there
a distinct visual advantage between MK and Eboni black, or is it only
measurable?

Thanks for your answers.

Michael,

Eboni is less warm but UC MK is a bit darker. In most printers I've had I
preferred the relatively cooler Eboni. Even though the X-Rite says the UC
MK is slightly darker, the Eboni looked darker.

However, in some recent 4000 test strips I've seen, the differences in
darkness/dmax are more serious -- in fact, dramatic. With both the 7600 and
then more so with the 4000, the Eboni dmax I'm seeing is slipping. The
smaller dot size, perhaps with some other differences, seems to be working
against Eboni and the MIS PK also. It's odd that in the C86 the UC PK is
darker than the MIS PK on Premium Semimatte, but in the 7500 the MIS PK does
better than the UC PK. But, back to the UC Matte Black, in some 4000 test
strips I've seen the UC MK has such a better dmax that it would be a serious
contender for me in that printer even despite it's higher price. I'm just
speculating that the 7600 may be close to the same as the 4000 in this
respect.

Thanks a lot for your answer, Paul. Hmmmm, I get the feeling that maybe I
should just stick with the UC inkset and QTR and call it my dedicated b/w
printer? :) I print on Photorag, btw, and I am not displeased with my
prints, just always looking for a way to make them better. Perhaps no
changes are in order..... Thanks again.

Michael,

I have found the UC MK works well with the MIS inks. That is, one can have
the UT7 and the UC MK in the printer at the same time and have the
advantages of both.
