Posterization when printing:Why?

Posterization when printing:Why?

2004-12-23 by Andre Vallejo

I'm printing using UT-FSN inks in an Epson 1160,on EEM,with Paul's RGB Mild curves. Results are fine, but there is one problem: Some parts of my images posterize and loose all detail.. See an example of the original file in http://www.andrevallejo.net/graficos/detalhe.jpg . The parts that posterize when printed are marked in red. Anyone have an idea of why it happens?
Thanks,
André

I'd use a 21-step file to isolate the problem area and fix it on the curve.
The FS inks in the 1160, however, should print with very little modification
to the default curve. That is, try printing the grayscale file with no
curve. The image should be a bit light but have a good ramp. If you still
see posterization, it may be an indication that something is wrong.

Just printed the 21 step file and it seems that from 65 to 80,it all
looks pretty much the same.So I guess this is the problem. Can you
give me some hints on how to modify the curve? I've been looking at
it,and noticed that it has 15 points,where I expected 10 or 20,so I
got a bit lost...

Andre

Have you checked that the inks are in the right places? For example, in a
purge 4 print, the C should be by far the darkest of the grays, but not as
dark as the K. The Y is the lightest, and M is also quite light. If you
are using the Mild partitioning curve, what you describe is almost as if the
Y or M are too dark. Their curves do go relatively flat in the area you're
describing.

Assuming the inks are in the right places, the red curve, controlling the
dark gray ink, gives you the most control. You can probably adjust the
points in that area and solve the problem.

The test strips on my web page have labels that might be useful in relating
the various numbers that will appear on the test strips and curves boxes.
See the index at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm.

Hope this helps.
