qtr + qtrgui: Windows printing error with curves ?

qtr + qtrgui: Windows printing error with curves ?

2004-12-27 by abzx2001uk

I'm using qtr on a PC with an Epson 2100. I'm using qtrgui. Current
versions of each.

I've been working with a test image. Saved as a grayscale .tiff [-
with embedded profile = Gray Gamma 2.2 -- also tried using Dot Grain
20% though I'm guessing that this isn't the issue.].

Works fine and produces a nicely neutral print. I'm already impressed
with the result. I'm using Epson Archival Matte (Enhanced Matte) with
the Matte Black cartridge. Paper type set to 'Matte'.

However (I wanted to experiment making a slightly warmer print) - any
combination of the curves settings (other than none) seems to cause
Windows to give me a printing error: "quadtoprinter.exe has
encountered a problem and needs to close." Etc. Though the program
doesn't actually shutdown.

For example - when trying to use UC-EEnhMAtte-warm &
UC-EEnhMAtte-cool. I'm assuming that the UC stands for Ultrachrome.
I'm using Ultrachrome inks.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I searched the messages over
the past couple of days. Apologies if I've missed something obvious
and this has been raised previously.

Update: same problem with the new combined installation (2.1c).

Works fine until I try to use the curves. Using curves causes
quadtoprinter.exe to crash.

Any help appreciated. And, again, apologies if I am missing something
obvious.

Isn’t 2880 invalid for Matte paper? I have no idea, but maybe try it at
1440 until someone knowledgeable comes up with something.

Thanks. And thanks again. Yes it works when I set the resolution to
1440 / 1440 super.

(I'm not getting an option to choose enhanced/archival matte as the
media type. Hence my choice of vanilla matte. Or any opportunity to
select ink type.)

I normally print colour(color) using QImage and the Epson drivers.
I've noticed that the 2100(2200) allows me to select a resolution of
2880 with archival (enhanced) matte and the matte black ink cartridge.
Where as the 9600 doesn't.

What is 1440 super?

1440 Super is uni-directional printing using 1440. I'm pretty sure Roy does
not recommend 2880 since the profiles are all generated for 1440.

[Digital BW] Re: qtr + qtrgui: Windows printing error with curves ?

2004-12-28 by Roy Harrington

The dpi was the issue. All profiles are for 1440 so that's the dpi to use.

The two different 1440 selections are for how many passes are done to
get all the dots onto the page. 1440 dpi uses 4 passes and 1440 super
uses 8 passes. The reason for this is to use different physical jets for
each pass to reduce the likelihood of banding. But of course more passes
take more time. The other major quality issue is whether the head prints
on both directions or just one way. This is the "Speed" option Faster means
bi-directional and Better means uni-directional. How much difference
this will make on each printer depends on how consistent the positioning
of the head is on the printer.

Thanks for the response here. I'm very impressed with the software and
will be buying it. I have never previously managed to make a good
black and white inkjet prints. I'm getting very good results with this
RIP.

I normally print colour these days. I came to inkjet from RA4 but
started out learning black and white printing in a darkroom. Very
pleased with the degree of neutrality which this software gives me and
I'm inspired to shoot some black and white work.

Thanks again.

Roy ...

Thanks for QTR. I am in the learning process and am very pleased with
results I am getting.

A suggestion ... I think it would be helpful if this information were
included in the QTR-gui Help utility.

Fred.
