Bruce, I started with silverfast and dumped it in favour of vuescan for just
the reasons you describe. I keep retrying it because I love the histogram in
preview, but it does really badly for me in BW negs.

Re: [Digital BW] Silverfast problem

I went exactly the opposite way... from Vuescan to Silverfast and have
generally been happy with the results.
Are you using the HDR (or something like that) setting? It ends up
giving you a negative image which, by inverting then setting a white &
a black in levels or curves, gives a pretty wide tonaltiy with a lot of
hightlight detail. Kind of a pain, but I've been happy with the
results. You might also try - I haven't done this - scanning a b/w neg
as a color neg and working with it in photoshop. but then, for the
hassle, using Vuescan might be best...

MY problem with the Sprintscan/Silverfast is that I can't center the
prescan exactly, so I always end up with the left or right 5-10% cut
off. Piddling, I know, but it keeps me awake at night. Any advice?

I want a raw scan and I get this best with Vuescan - for B/W anyway. I can't
help on silverfast I'm afraid!
