Bradford Papers

Inkjetmall has some new papers that appear to be a good value for rag papers.
Anyone tried them yet?

How do they compare to EEM and Photo Rag?

[Digital BW] Bergger paper

2005-01-19 by José Miguel Ferreira

Hi all,

Any experience with Bergger paper? They produce wonderful paper for the wet
darkroom. It seems like it's their own coating on Arches 300g/m2 mould-made
cotton paper...

It's kind of expensive, so any info from users would be nice before ordering
it.

Here's their link: http://www.bergger.com/introusa.htm

Also, what's the difference between "Hot Press" and "Cold Press" coating,
besides the temperature, obviously.... :-)

Thanks!
José

Re: [Digital BW] Bergger paper

Hot Press paper has a smoother finish, which is created by passing the paper
sheet through heated rollers. Cold Pressed is where the paper is passed
through cold rollers. Cold Pressed is also often classified as NOT and will
have a rougher texture than hot pressed paper. Depending on the manufacturer
cold pressed surfaces can often have a noticeable texture which won't suit
everyone's taste.

You might also find that the hot pressed paper prints with a little more
detail than the cold pressed or NOT

Regards

Hamish

Jose,

I've used the Bergger Smooth surface ink jet matt surface paper and
it is very nice. It has a warmer tone but with no brightners. It is
expensive though.

I also use Begger Cot 320 for Alternative Process prints and it to is
excellent, but I wouldn't reccomend an uncoated paper for ink jet
print unless you are looking for something different.

No direct experience. I went to the booth of Bergger at the
Photokina show and collected a print made on a 2200 with UC
inks. Only available in sheet sizes. Quality is at the level
of the Hahnemuhle, Hawk Mountain Condor papers. The black in
the print measures 1.56 Dmax, paper PN33 High Definition Fine
Art, rather rough texture and creamy colour. Do not know what
driver they used for that print. I think the Innova papers are
a bit better than that category but lack a bit of the feel of
good art papers. But the last are far cheaper though.

I also talked with the people of Arjo Wiggens, Canson-Arches
papers and asked why they couldn't make a similar quality to
the Bergger coating. They admitted that Bergger used their
stock but said that the quantity the company makes isn't very
high and in all they were a bit denigrating the firm. I still
am waiting for the ArjoWiggens new paper samples that I had
asked for at the booth and later on by phone in Belgium (their
representation in the Netherlands is nill if one asks for
inkjet paper). The samples they showed at the booth were not
as good as Bergger's but I was interested in a new thick
passepartout paper for inkjet printing. Strange to see a small
firm deliver better coatings than an international paper giant
like ArjoWiggins.

Ernst,

Thanks for the info. Which one of the Hahnemühle papers the Bergger paper
felt like? And why did Arches say that Bergger was denigrating the firm?

Bergger has 2 papers. The PN33 I have here is close in colour
to the HM Albrecht Duerer but the PN33 texture is slightly
rougher.

Sorry, the Arches people didn't show much respect for Bergger.

In the manufacturing process paper is passed through calendering rollers.
These rollers level and smooth its surface. Papers that have been calendered
with hot rollers have a very smooth surface and are called hot press papers.
Cold press papers are calendered under cold rollers and have a slightly
textured surface.

Hamish

The PN32 is the smooth surface equivalent and has a similar DMAX.

You can purchase sample packs of their papers to test drive.

Thanks. The local - and only - distributor of Bergger will receive them next
week. Hopefully they will receive a folder with the different paper types.
