This subject is getting tiring. Pick whatever you like, but for me, and I have Windows pcs and Mac, there is no comparison. Mac OS X. Extremely fast, NO crashes or frozen screens. Now please, go make pictures.

I've used them both for many years and for graphics applications I find Mac clearly superior, though significantly more expensive (obviously). The 30" lcd monitor was $3600 when I purchased it, and that didn't include the $600 video card needed to drive it. (The monitor has dropped to around $3000, and the new G5's include the necessary video card, but this is still an expensive set-up.) Then again, Ferraris cost more than Fords. Windows has improved greatly in its many iterations, but the Mac OS is more stable (I have been unable to get OS X to crash) and, I think, much easier to use. I like not have to worry about viruses with the Mac, and I've had wonderful experiences with Apple support when needed. There are some RIPs that aren't supported for Mac, and a few other relevant programs, but I've not been at all limited in finding appropriate software for the Mac. In informal speed comparisons running Photoshop, the Mac G5 2.5ghz is noticeably speedier than any Windows machine I've encountered. Apple's chip change shouldn't affect much at all in terms of what users will see on the screen---the differences between the Mac OS and Windows aren't primarily chip-dependent. I think that the platform differences are becoming less significant as Windows catches up, though Mac still has an edge when it comes to graphics applications. And, according to Consumer Reports, the hardware reliability of Macs is better than PCs. 2 cents worth. David Ward David V. Can someone please tell me where the Forum on B&W Digital Printing is? It seems to have moved somewhere else. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

It's a fair question whether digital capture should be part of this forum. I'd say it should, to the extent it relates to B&W, because we can't make a good B&W print without good input information. Digital capture appears to be the future, whether we like it or not. (And I may be in the "not" group, but feel no choice but to learn and master B&W digital capture.) Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Agreed for the same reasons scanners have been (and are less commonly lately) discussed.

Paul, >It's a fair question whether digital capture should be part of >this forum. I'd say it should, to the extent it relates to B&W, >because we can't make a good B&W print without good input >information. Digital capture appears to be the future, whether >we like it or not. (And I may be in the "not" group, but feel >no choice but to learn and master B&W digital capture.) I agree to a point, and the important part of your statement is "to the extent it relates to B&W". I enjoy and learn from and participate in these threads to some degree. The problem, as we have seen from time to time, is that it takes some awareness, discretion and self-discipline not to let it get out of hand (qualities which sadly seem to be lacking in many). Once started, these threads tend to go on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on on and on - way beyond their original relevence, and they crowd out other threads to the point that the forum begins to resemble those on dpreview and other places. Think how many times we have someone comment on how nice this forum is, how different, how friendly, how high-level, how informative - the implication being how UNLIKE other forums it is. People who troll those other forums don't stay here long because their troll needs aren't satisfied (thank goodness). But if this trend continues then those types will begin hanging around and it will only get worse and spiral downward. It doesn't take much. We have already lost a few key contributors, people with many years experience and much to offer, who seldom if ever show up any more due to trends on this forum over the past months. We really don't need debates on 35mm lenses vs digital lenses, D70 vs D2x, full frame vs APS, CMOS vs CCD, Canon vs Nikon, Mac vs PC, and on and on forever. Everything that can possibly be said on those subjects has already been said forty thousand gazillion times on the other forums. We have a treasure here and I think we all need to use some restraint to preserve what we have. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

Judging from his post I think Paul intended to respond to your identical post in the thread "Digital vs scan for BW Print" where, in my opinion, valid issues are being discussed.
