Best B&W ink for Epson 1290

Best B&W ink for Epson 1290

2005-01-23 by malcolm_rchrdsn

I am about to get into B&W inkjet printing with my 1290. Initially,
I want to do neutral prints. After looking at the MIS site, I am
confused about which inkset would be best. It seems that the
Ultratone range is not yet quite right for this printer. Is this the
case? If not, which is the best to choose ie UT. UT2, FS or FSN?
Would the Quadtone inks be better for the 1290? Thanks for any
advice.

Malcolm.

UT2 inks and 1280 curves work in the 1290.

Malcolm, Drop me a line via my website (www.imagesoflife.co.uk) and I
will let you know about the neutral mono inks available in the UK and
what systems are available. I presume you are from the UK as you
mention 1290 and not 1280.

Although there is a learning curve involved and some expense
Peizography is the best currently on offer. It has a selection of
tones but none of them are strictly neutral, there is warm neutral or
cool neutral, selenium and sepia. You can import them easily as I
have done myself. That said, I've had my problems with the versions
of the profiles for the 1290 and I am currently using profiles that
have been made for my specific printers.
Since getting this system (and getting some good prints without any
metermerism or dots,) I acquired an Epson 4000 with UT inks and that
now produces some really amazing black and white using the quadtone
rip. Without the 4000, the 1290 would have to do the job and I am
sure it would.
Regards John.

Paul,

This thread is a perfect oportunity for me to ask a
question I have recently had:

Can I put the EZ-N inks in a 6 color Epson printer (in
my case an EX or a 1200)?

I have a C82 in which I am using the EZ-N set and am
thrilled with the results (using EHM paper so far).

No, the EZ inks are the wrong density for a hextone. You must have
relatively light inks in the LM & LC spots.

The UT2 has an "EZ" mode also. With no curves, the sliders can control the
tone to a certain extent.

OK - I can't just put the EZ-N inks in a 6 color printer (I didn't
want to have to but another ink set). Could I use the Eboni in the
black position of a 6 color printer and do Black Only prints like
Clayton Jones?
