Ilford Archiva Quadtone Inks

Ilford Archiva Quadtone Inks

2001-11-15 by Michael J. Kravit

Has anyone on the list had any experience with the Ilford system
using their Archiva Monokrome Quads and the Encad 42" Novajet 630i w/
Ripstar RIP?

I saw some prints a client had made on this system. They were as
close as I have seen to a selenium toned FB print.

I guess that this is a tuned system and fairly expensive, but the
prints were silver gelatin clones.

Which paper were they printed on ? You state the inks but not the
paper ?

Frank,

I believe they were printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308, at least it
looked and felt just like it.

Are you familiar with them?

Nope, I'm just catching up on the materials hence my interest in your
post. I'm looking for the closest thing to a traditional fibre base
glossy air dried finish - I usually ("traditionally")use Agfa
Multicontrast Classic

We have an Ilford 700i 42" printer at work( made
by Encad). We're using both the color pigments
and dyes and I'm finding it makes a pretty good
print. My latest experiment was printing on
canvas. To my surprise, it looks really good. So,
now you've got me curious about the Monokrome
Quads. I'll see if I can get samples from our
rep. If so I'll let you know.

Alan,

Thanks that would be really interesting.

The main reason I ask is because I need a new wide format printer for
my office. I have heard mixed reviews on the Encad line. A local
photo lab has the one that uses 8 color inks. Their output is very
nice.

So we are considering the Epson 10000, HP-5000, and the Encad. Being
able to print with the Monokromes would be a plus as I could print
B/W photos in the office as well.

I have put a call into the Encad rep, but have not heard back from
him yet as I only called yesterday.

Thanks
Mike

Hello Mike,

I own an Ilford NovaJet 700i, 60". It is OEM¹ed from Encad and is basically
an Encad 700. We use both Ilford Archiva (color Dye) and MonoKrome inks
(Quad Pigment). I have been very happy with the MonoKrome ink set. The
quality of output is wonderful, especially on larger sized prints, 30"x"40
and larger.

In our workflow we do our own "conversion" from an RGB file into 4 separate
tonal ranges. Files are then printed through Ripstar, basically bypassing
Ilford color management. The result gives us more control and smoother
results then the Ilford workflow.

We developed this technique for our IRIS. We produce Quadtone prints on
the IRIS using both Lysonic Neutral and Warm tone inksets.

Hope this info helps.
