RE: [Digital BW] C86 - question about MIS neutral tone inks

2005-02-01 by Yang, Howard

Hi All,

I'm also interested in C86 w/MIS EZN. Can someone provide a shopping list
of all the parts needed from MIS to do my own refill?
MIS website is not very clear on what empty cartridges and syringe are
needed for the C86.

Thank you in advance,
Howard

Subject: [Digital BW] C86 - question about MIS neutral tone inks

Hello everyone,

First of all, thanks to all those that are sharing their experiences
on this great board. I know others have said the same thing, but
because of the quality of the information it bears repeating.

So: I'm looking at purchasing an Epson C86. Based on the positive
reviews I've read here and elsewhere, I've decided to make this my
first dedicated B&W printer (the price ain't too bad, either). My
question relates to the MIS UT EZN (neutral) inks, namely, is there
any difference in the tone of the inks that go into the C, M and Y
slots? It wasn't very clear on the MIS website that they are indeed
different, but I'm guessing they are all different dilutions of K.

Thanks a bunch,
Jens

For the EZN, there are two inks: Eboni used in the K
position, and the EZN, which is used in CMY positions.

For EZW, there are two inks: Eboni in K, and EZW used in
CMY.

The chips that go in each position are different. So, the
carts are not interchangeable between CMY, but the inks
are.

MIS has different product numbers for bulk inks for CMY for
the EZN, but it is all the same ink. Ditto for EZW.

Lee

Im a recent convert to the Epson C86 from Canon/Lyson and am very
pleased with the results so far.

Here you go regarding what you need (I think I got it correct, someone
else check my list :-> ):

- CYM inks are all the same with the C86 EZ combo. So just buy a
bottle of C to refill CY and M.

- Buy Eboni black or Photo Black depending on whether you're printing
on Matte or Glossy paper, respectively - neutral or warm. I started
with neutral inkset.

- Buy two or more syringes (at least 2: 1 for black and 1 for CYM)
- Buy needles to go along with the syringes
- Buy 4 or more empty cartridges with chips
- Buy a chip resetter
- Buy a cartridge primer / bottom fill adaptor (a small plastic nub
that attaches to the syringe and *sucks* ink out through the cartidges
exit port..)
- Go to home depot and get a clamp to hold the cartidge while you're
filling it (this is optional, but I find it helpful)
- Optional, but you may also want to get some extra replacement
'chips' for the cartridges

Get it going and then you can play with using different combos of warm
and neutral inks

Hope this is helpful. Have fun!

Howard,

Thank you for your feedback as well as the link.

One more question, the link listed empty cartridges for C84 - I assume that
works for C86 as well?

Thank you,
Howard

I'm not Howard or Howard... ;-)

But, that is correct, the C84 carts and the C86 carts are the same.

I'm placing an order now myself...

Thanks Lee.

Howard: make sure that when you order with MIS - and if you decide to
order some bulk ink as well - that you don't order a whole bottle for
each color position. The salesperson I spoke with was helpful, but
didn't point out that the CMY positions are all the same ink; as a
result I bought 2 bottles of bulk ink too many. I don't think that it
was an attempt to sell me more than I need, just that he may have
thought that they were all different.

One other question for the group: is the bottom fill adapter
necessary? Has anyone here not run into problems without using one?

Thanks again,
Jens

Whoops, double neg on my last post. Actually wondering if anybody's

I don't have a C86 but rather a 2100. However, I once forgot to extract a
little ink out of a new set of cartridges with the bottom fill adaptor.
Needless to say they didn't fire until I did.

Hi Jens,

I wasn't aware of the adapter, so I didn't order one, but I have not
had any problems.I waiting for about an hour, and
if I can't get a good nozzle check a cleaning will do the trick.
