Update on MIS PKN and LKN in the Epson 4000

Update on MIS PKN and LKN in the Epson 4000

2005-02-03 by Carl Schofield

The new MIS PKN and UT7 LK neutral inks are performing very well in my
Epson 4000 for both B&W and color. I've tried PKN only printing with
the Epson driver, PKN + LKN neutral profiles with both QTR and IJC/OPM,
and PKN+LKN+LM+Y sepia profiles. All yield a dmax of about 2.46 on
Kirkland Signature Glossy paper. I was surprised at how good the
linearity was for the 4000 Epson driver printing BO with the PKN
(compare density plots below for the linearized QTR PKN+LKN profile and
Epson driver PKN only). After making some adjustments in the LKN:LM:Y
ratios I also have a very nice sepia tone with deep, rich blacks. I'm
still working with a mix of Epson UC inks in the color positions and
MIS PKN and LKN so I won't re-profile all my papers for color until I
have all inks switched over to the MIS UC equivalents. However, I did
print the Kirkland with a new RGB profile and colors were very close to
the original prints with straight UC inks so I don't expect any
problems printing color with the neutral PK and LK inks. I'm also
still evaluating different glop overlay application rates on the 4000
prints by running them through my 2200 and printing with a glop only
overlay profile. My initial test were done with an IJC glop only
profile (glop in 2200 LK slot) with glop ink limit set to 50%. There
was almost no bronzing and only some slight gloss differential to begin
with on the Kirkland PKN prints and after glop application both
bronzing and gloss differential were completely gone. See last density
plot below for post glop coated PKN+LKN print. Slightly higher dmin
from the glop but a terrific dmax boost to the highest dmax (2.602)
I've ever obtained for any ink/paper combo and beautiful artifact free
gloss finish. I'm still considering my options for installing glop in
the 4000 that will also enable me to print both B&W and color, but
these prints are so good I'm leaning towards dumping matte paper
printing completely and just using glop in the matte black slot for
overcoating prints. The matte prints on cotton rag with dmax levels in
the 1.7 range just look dull and pathetically weak next to these new RC
prints.

And if you can be bothered waxing the prints dMax may even go further....

My MIS order has shipped so maybe that means PKN is now available. The
order was held up and I am hoping they were waiting for the ink. Fingers
crossed...

Steve,

Yes the PKN is shipping - received mine two days ago. I used to wax RC
prints after applying Printshield spray so I'll give the wax a try on
the glopped prints as well - although I'm pretty happy with a 2.6 dmax
as is and love the soft gloss finish.

Hi Carl,

What wax are you using?

I was using Renaissance Wax from Light Impressions on the Printshield
sprayed RC prints - worked fine on Ilford Smooth Pearl in particular.
I don't think I'll need it on the glopped prints, but if it raises dmax
some more and more importantly provides some surface protection I'll
use it.

Thanks Carl. I thought that might be the one you were using.

I wonder is wax will provide the oxygen barrier Paul is looking for.

Re: [Digital BW] Update on MIS PKN and LKN in the Epson 4000

Yeah the problem with the wax is that it requires one hell of a lot of
buffing to get a clean looking finish.

Try Epson Premium Luster also. I think it is one of the best looking papers
I have seen - a beautiful silky matt finish. I only wish it was sold in the
UK. Just out of interest, what dMax are you getting with MIS PK (warm) with
an overcoat?

I had a dmax of 2.28 on Kirkland Glossy with MIS PK and glop in my
2200, but that was with glop applied during printing.

does anyone know if there will be a way to use glop on the 1280 with
UT2 or UTEZ inks? It would mean having a refillable cartridge or a CIF
I think. I would much prefer a refillable cartridge, as I have never
had a clog with my non-CIF system, and I only print once a week or
less. Glop would be great in the 1280, there are a lot of us using the
1280 I think.......Doug M

Yes, you can now purchase 1280 UT2 carts with glop in the Y position.
Paul Roark has curves for using this modification.

Doug,

>1280 with UT2

Yes, curves have been posted on my webpage at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/UT2-curves.html .

All the other curves except sepia work the same as always.

MIS has UT2-Glop carts for sale, pre-loaded.

The Glop is in the yellow position. The Blue curve controls it. Adjusting
the Glop-Blue curve is easy. Just pull the Blue curve down where bronzing
shows.

Use 2880 for smoothness.

Use the printer regularly. The glop on the pads might cause particles to
adhere to the head if it dries out there. Rinsing the pad occasionally is
probably a good idea.

At any rate, UT2-Glop is there are supported.

>or UTEZ inks?

No, I have done nothing with that printer. Costco paper with EZ inks are so
good no more is needed. You might also use PKN with the EZ-N set.

Glop and 1280....
