Hello all, Can anyone suggest a good Canadian supplier of quality papers (Hahnemuhle & co.), or an American supplier with reasonable shipping to points Canada? If I order from the States, what sort of duty can I expect to pay, if any? Much appreciated, Jens

Where are you in Canada? In Toronto, there is a very low profile Epson dealer (Hint: On Carlaw) that sells papers, supplies, Epson printers, at much better price than the two big names. I heard that they might be going to carry HRag the last time I was there but I am not sure. Otherwise, the Camera store and I just found out Vistek sells Moab. Anyway, you don't pay duty shopping cross border. I have done it before. Just don't ship UPS ground (expect to pay major custom agent fee). Ship with US postal service. You just need to pay GST. CCBC (Computer Consumables Buyers Club www.ccbc-club.com) also in Toronto carries the complete Epson fine art line, Ilford papers and Premier Art Hot Press re-branded as their own CCBC fine art line at an excellent price point. I've ordered rolls of HPR from Jim Doyle at Shades of Paper (http://www.shadesofpaper.com). Great communication, prompt shipping, careful packaging and good prices. Even with currency exchange, GST and customs brokerage fee if using UPS or FedEx (no duty) it's still a deal. Martin

Thanks Michael and Martin, I'm in western Canada (Edmonton), but I'm guessing it won't make much of a difference since shipping is pretty much the same if ordering from the states. I've been reading great reviews about Jim Doyle and sop, so I'll take a closer look at his offerings, as well as those from CCBC. Thanks again, Jens

For some papers it's cheaper to bring them in from the states... Applies to UC carts for the 2200 as well, 8.90US vs 19.95Cdn. For the 220ml inks for 4000's and up, prices here are similar to stateside. > > Anyway, you don't pay duty shopping cross border. Well I seem to, on everything from paper and inks, to scanner parts. > I have done it > before. Just don't ship UPS ground (expect to pay major custom agent > fee). Ship with US postal service. You just need to pay GST. I just paid a 37.00 brokerage fee for a 128.00 item. Plus duty and GST. US postal service charged me brokerage fee, duty and tax on an express shipment from Colorado, the overnight express took 7 days. USPS uses fed-ex for their express shipments, the sender didn't know at the time. The shipment was exposed neg's ... Make sense? There are no set rules it seems to me. You are also at the mercy of the particular customs official that checks your package. Carolyn

Carolyn, Sorry to hear your bad experience. My USPS air-parcel (snail-mail) service experience is that it is slow.. but was never charged duty. Duty also depends on the country of origin of the product. If the product is not made in US (with NAFTA), I guess you could be charged. (Esp for things like paper, since Canada makes so much of it). Anyway.. 2200 UC carts does not cost 19.95CDN. CCBC charges C$15 and the place I quoted charges even less if you buy more than a few carts. I had a very bad experience with ccbc though.. I was there on a Sat, by the time I found parking (that costs money), they are about to close and refused to sell me anything (His excuse is that he has shutdown the computer). I don't think I will go there again.. Michael

Thanks Michael... when the "product" is exposed negs, there shouldn't be any charges .. When the product is a film carrier for my microtek, I feel it's robbery to be charged almost 40.00 just for customs to look at it. :) > Anyway.. 2200 UC carts does not cost 19.95CDN. I'm in Calgary, and that's what I pay here. Except last trip downtown, I complained about the cost and was given a 'discount'. > CCBC charges C$15 and > the place I quoted charges even less if you buy more than a few carts. Hi Jens, I'm in Edmonton as well. Have you tried McBain Camera? Their prices tend to be close to list (i.e. not discounted), but perhaps you bend an ear. The one on 107 Ave. stocks most of the Epson inks and media. Also, talk to Jeff, the manager of the computer department, at London Drugs at Oliver Square. He told me he's willing to beat any other local price on Epson inks and media. Let me know what you find out. [L]

Hi Leroy, Thanks a bunch. I've had a couple of people contact me outside of the forum about Canadian suppliers of Hahnemuhle papers in particular. I'm hesitant to mention anything about it at this point since I don't know anything yet about prices, service, etc. If it turns out to be a good source I'll definitely post it here, since suppliers in Canada should be supported if the price and service are right; it spares us the pain of seemingly arbitrarily applied customs & duties! Hi Jens, > suppliers in Canada should be supported if the price and > service are right; it spares us the pain of seemingly > arbitrarily applied customs & duties Very true. Another thought: perhaps at some point we could combine orders to save on shipping. Feel free to contact me off-list if you're interested. [L]

Excellent idea, Leroy. I'll get in touch with you if / when the time comes. Come to think of it, I could eventually see a mini-co-op for Edmonton & area B&W inkjet printers for this kind of stuff. One step at a time, Jens, one step at a time. Take care, Jens > Hi Jens, > > > suppliers in Canada should be supported if the price and > > service are right; it spares us the pain of seemingly > > arbitrarily applied customs & duties > > Very true. > > Another thought: perhaps at some point we could combine orders to save on
