Helene, I always thought that the ultra SCSI were best for Photoshop work (the scratch disk reads and writes and wears down cheap hard drives), and I know they have a faster transfer rate. But as I was looking into this last night I read on the apple site that the ultra SCSI's are also the ones to use for RAID configurations. IDE (ATA) are cheap, ultra SCSI's are not. I definately want the Ultra SCSI for photoshop, but for the RAID? I don't know yet... more research is in order. <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/233/wo/4pM6 2v8LmGubSli6E/2.7.0.3.30.1> Carolyn

I use SCSI hard drives now...they have been good to me. I also have my scanners - LS2000 and Uma 2400 on a SCSI chain. That G 4 dual processor sure sounds nice... t

I have SCSI drives in my old mac... always good to me too. My SCSI chain never worked well for me. I determine which scanner I'll need and plug it up to the computer, then reboot... Same for the CD burner, get's boring but my data is not lost. Looking forward to a G4 or G5 tower. I've been using the G4 powerbook for Photoshop, fast enough most of the time but I need a bigger monitor. Are you getting the dual? C

Here are some thoughts on better storage options. There are some good Firewire storage options available for external storage. I have seen at least one Firewire RAID and another external system that can hold up to one terabyte of drives. I have not looked at the transfer speeds of IDE vs Firewire vs SCSI lately but Firewire is definitely something to look into. For backing up large amounts of data the best way is to use tape, the tapes can easily be stored off site, and should be, for added security. There are a variety of tape drives available, each with their own pros/ cons so do some research before deciding which one. If you have never used a tape drive before beware that they are slow and finding data on a tape can be time consuming. While they do hold massive amounts of data they are best used for backing up in case of problems where you would want to restore all the data at once rather than archiving where you are looking for individual files. What about DVD as an alternative to CDs? Some of the new G4s come with the super drive that can burn DVDs and external burners are also available. It seems that this may be a good alternative to CDs. Sorry if some of this is a little late, it took awhile to get caught up on the two days of posts I missed while on the road. cort anderson www.trwheels.com
