Hi, I've made a couple posts and lurked for a while but have not introduced myself to the group.
I'm a retired organic chemist who has enjoyed photography for many years and am slowly getting into digital darkroom while still resisting digital cameras. I'm even biulding a new darkroom that will probably be mostly for developing film.
My wife and I shoot 5x7, 4x5 6x7 and a little 35mm; she's mostly color and I'm mostly B&W. we have an Epson 1280 and new 4000 and we are really impressed with the 4000. We're using QTR on both.
This discussion group is great and very educational and I'm amazed at the number of messages per day.
Keep it up and I hope I can keep up with you.

Welcome.

Excellent.

Do you mind if I occasionally run some questions by you relating to
chemistry? (I lost my organic chemist brother this last year.)

Hi all:
Just joined.
I have printed in a wet darkroom for years using Durst equipment and
recently started digital bw.
I am using an Epson R300 with the Epson inks for black only printing, using
various papers, recently mostly Red River Dourian.
I also used an Epson 780 with Lyson Quad Black, but am getting tired of the
ink flow issues.
My originals are almost always 35mm or medium format negatives, scanned in a
Dimage Scan Multi scanner.

Welcome to the BW forum. I'm not familiar with the R300, but if you
can get refillable carts for it you might try some MIS Eboni. Most BO
folks that I've communicated with prefer it. It's really beautiful
stuff. I'm using it in my R200 and have had zero clogging problems.

Clayton

RE: [Digital BW] Re: new member

2006-03-19 by GEERT DEPREST

Thanks. You started me on BO printing, I bought one of your sample prints.

The R300 takes the same cartridges as the R200.
On the R300, if I switch the black ink out for another (like eboni), to do
BO printing,
what does that do to the printer's color printing ?

I also have a C86 which, according to the MIS site, I could set up with BW
ultratone carts.
I cant tell from the MIS site if you can get the ultratone carts for the
R200, howevre.

I'm guessing it wouldn't work very well because of mixing pigment and
dye. But the printers are such low cost you could have two. Along
with Eboni in the BW one, I also recommend the entire BW ink set,
either warm or neutral version (R2-W or R2-N). That would give you
the option of full ink prints as well as BO.

The C86 isn't as good for BO, but maybe it could go back to being the
color printer...

thanks. At the moment i am doing the bo prints with the epson dye ink in
the r300 on red river dourian.
I just ordered the mis "easy" set for neutral prints for the c86. I think
I'd like to keep the color inks in the r300 for the time being.

As an amateur, I print only intermittently, i.e. not every night or even
every week. So, if it had been a some time since the last print session,
the test print would show gaps. Following the lyson instruction on this, i
would run the clean heads routine once, and then wait for a couple of hours.
But even that did not work last weekend.

Thanks, I too print intermittently, so will send back
the Lyson cartridges unless someone on the net wants
to buy them.... Ordered some MIS cartridges last
night after research.
