While you're discussing matting with regards to signature it's worthy to consider the effect the mat and window have on the image. Let me regurgitate some of the stuff I learned in art school (Gestalt theory, blah blah blah). The tighter the opening of the mat is to the image, the more it will visually act as a "window" and propel the viewer "into" the image. This tends to accentuate content of the image. The more space that is allowed around the image, the more the viewer will look "at" the image. This tends to accentuate the composition of the image. The same is true for the size of the mat, a larger mat accentuates the design, a smaller, the content. Also, there is the visual effect that given the same amount of mat on top and below, the image will appear to be below the centerline. This is why there is usually more space given on the bottom and it is acceptable to have less space at the top than on the sides. And then there is mat color - I'm not even going to go there! These are broad generalizations, and a lot depends on the image itself, but they tend to bear out if you work with them. John
