Hewlett Packard and B&W?

Hewlett Packard and B&W?

2005-03-02 by pdcorlis

Hi All

A friend asked me why we don't see more written about the HP printers, their photo grey
inks, and the quality of black and white prints they make. To be honest - I don't know the
answer, so I thought I'd ask the group. What is it about these HP printers that makes them
"popular" here and elsewhere on the web? It seems its hard to find any group discussions
about them from a google search.

Thanks in advance

There may be actual technical reasons, print quality etc.

But historically, HP emphasized business (graphs, charts, diagrams, etc) and speed over
photo quality. Epson owned the fine print business and certainly still leads in that area.
This means that Epson has typically been slower at printing too. None of this really refers
to printers that cost less than ???hmmm??? maybe $500 cuz they don't matter to me.

Also, since on HP you change print heads everytime you change cartridges, it is harder to
color calibrate in a really fine sense (cheap throw away heads, but most importantly
different every "month" (every cartridge change).

Rumor has it (i.e. I haven't checked it out) that HP has come a long way in photo quality.

Incidently, when I say photo quality/fine print I am referring to museum exhibition grade,
not mass market.

So I for example would just go "buy epson" for my next printer cuz I know that it makes
the gallery prints that I require. Perhaps not fair anymore to HP? I don't really know, but it
might explain what you are asking. And it also brings up the point that maybe I should
check it out before I buy another one. :))

And Canon? also historicallly speed over FINE quality. Last I heard, and do not check
closely so..., they use fast fade inks (dye) and are not to be considered for museums.
Actually HP does/did too, and Epson but Epson got over it.

Now this info is not intended to be up to date cuz I don't really know the "last scoop".
More a historical prespective. And of course many others will disagree and say C or HP
make great photos, but that is not the kind of "stuff" that I am talking about.

Logical? maybe not. Explanation? maybe so.
