Re: QTR surprises....

Re: QTR surprises....

I've installed the latest version of QTR and followed the new workflow for Windows--and got a surprise. I had run out of EEM and didn't want to 'test' on Velvet, so used Epson double sided matte that I use for calendars and small books. I have a stack of test prints using a variety of curves/blends, all noted on the back with the settings/paper, etc. After upgrading I tried a 'none' again (with the double sided matte) and got a VERY warm print compared to the test print on EEM/none using the older version/workflow.

Initially I thought--well, perhaps there is a difference in the 2 versions, etc. I tried EEM/cool and some other versions, but the 'none' still bothered me (which had been a very neutral grey from 2.1.13 on EEM using the old workflow of grayscale tiff for printing). Out of curiousity, I uninstalled Vs. 2.2, cleaned out my QTR folder and installed 2.1.13 again and tried 'none' with it with the old grayscale tiff and also the "new" gray-matte image file. Amazing what a different paper will do (not that I don't know that using different paper profiles/papers and printing in color LOL)--leading me to believe that I will have to find the right paper/blend for each (since I'm not sure I want to tackle custom curve creation). I'm thinking that a coated paper in particular may make a difference but am not sure of that--perhaps someone can comment on that--and also make some suggestions for paper they prefer with QTR.

I have EEM on order and will go back and do the tests on it--since I find it a good test paper for Velvet. BTW--I also did a test print directly from PS on the same paper (double sided matte) and the 2200 paper profile for EEM/mk and got a 'neutral' print (though with metamerism). I am using a calibrated monitor for those wondering.

It was just interesting to me and I thought it might be for others just starting with QTR. I have just about decided to buy QTR--and find my right combo/blend and save the preset for each paper I use (primarily Epson Velvet, Hahnemuhle Photorag and Epson Premium Semigloss).

To address just one of your points:

all inkjet paper is coated. Only printing on a watercolor paper (i.e. blotter actually used for
watercolor) will avoid a coating. We commonly call "nice art papers" watercolor paper but
they aren't literally.

and coatings certainly make a difference: color of the coating is the obvious, but the way
they absorb (or not) various inks, etc.

To demo that, when your EEM comes in, print a test on the front, and then one on the
back (uncoated and diff color) of a sheet. What a difference, and if you it withour realizing
it like I did once, what confusion :)
