Re: [Digital BW] Scanner & Scanning Software Question

2005-03-12 by A. Huntley

David,

I use Silverfast Ai6 with my Epson Expression 1680 and have found, as others
have previously stated on this list, that it's pretty much useless for
scanning color and B&W negs. At least, that's my experience. Transparency
film is not problem. So, I generally use Silverfast for slide film and
Vuescan for B&W.

As for how to setup and use, visit Silverfast's website; they have many
instructional movies available. If you feel that you need more help beyond
what's available on the website and in the user manual, see if you can
obtain a copy of Taz Tally's Silverfast: The Official Guide. It's not great
for scanning help, but I found it useful for setting up the software;
especially the color management stuff.

Hope this helps.

I teach at a Vocational High School in the Phoenix area and we recently
received an Epson 4870 scanner and the bundled SilverFast Ai software.

I have not been able to get even close to a decent scan with the SilverFast
software but have had great success with the Epson scanning software which
has produced excellent scans and is very easy to use.

With SilverFast I must be doing something very wrong but for the life of me
I can't figure out what. All the scans come out black when loaded into
Photoshop. Could someone please give me some help with this, point me to
some online info about this combo of scanner and software because the
instructions are not detailed or much help. I know most people feel that the
SilverFast software is top notch but so far I am lost.

Any comments, advice or directions would be very much appreciated.

Alan:

All I have attempted so far is B&W scans from either student 35mm or my own
film in various sizes. We do not shoot much transparency film so my main
interest was in scanning B&W. You say that the SilverFast software is
basically worthless for scanning color and B&W negs !! why is that and why
does the software have such a good reputation if that is the case?

Thanks, David

PS: could someone give me the link to the SilverFast web site??

2005-03-12 by Danny Twang

Talking about scanning, is there anybody here that have tried both the
Epson and Canon scanner?
I've finally ordered a Canon 9950F scanner and are wondering if I did
the right choice....

I'm going to use it for MF and LF b&w film only.

thanks,
danny

Hi David,

>You say that the SilverFast software is basically worthless for scanning
>color and B&W negs !! why is that and why
does the software have such a good reputation if that is the case?

In my experience, Silverfast produces way too much contrast when scanning
negatives--whether using NegFix or not. I've tried ALL the profiles provided
and have yet to find one that even comes close to what I want to see in my
final scans. As a matter of fact, I've found that the Epson driver delivered
with the scanner does better with negatives; though, still, not what I
want/need. IMO, Vuescan does a much better job with B&W.

I think the reason Silverfast has such a good reputation probably revolves
around a couple of things: 1) most professionals and probably a high
percentage of amateurs scan mostly transparency film (it seems that most
scanning hardware and software is targeted to this film type), and 2)
Silverfast software is used by busy professional and labs where time is very
valuable. Silverfast offers a LOT of control within the scanning software
itself. Therefore, PS simply becomes an application for very minor touch-ups
and printing...most of the work--gamma, color correction, etc--is done
during the scan.

My goal during the scan phase is simply to deliver the most data I can to PS
without clipping the end points. I don't need lots of contrast, I don't need
to establish the black/white points at this time, I don't need to sharpen,
etc. I just want the best image to begin with (in 16-bit grayscale, of
course) so I can comfortably work on it in PS.

>PS: could someone give me the link to the SilverFast web site??

Hope this helps.

Thanks Alan!

You mentioned Vuescan software, where can I find some info on that since I
will primarily be doing B&W with this scanner? I have been on the SilverFast
web site this morning looking at all the help files etc. Lots of information
but I am going to keep plugging.

Any suggestions or tips for using the Epson software with my B&W scans?

Re: [Digital BW] Scanner & Scanning Software Question

2005-03-12 by A. Huntley

David,

Glad I could help.

Vuescan can be found at: www.hamrick.com

Ed provides great support and is continuously updating his software. Great
guy...great software! I don't really use the Epson scanning software much;
mostly for flat art scans for my daughter. For B&W film scanning I only use
Vuescan. Are you using a flatbed? If so, the most useful tip I could
probably pass on is to wet mount directly on to the glass bed. If you're not
familiar with this technique, e-mail me off-list and I'll send a document
describing it.

Thanks Alan!

You mentioned Vuescan software, where can I find some info on that since I
will primarily be doing B&W with this scanner? I have been on the SilverFast

but I am going to keep plugging.

Any suggestions or tips for using the Epson software with my B&W scans?

The latest version (8.1.4) on my iMac (G5, 10.3.8) is a disaster with
the Epson 3200 - extremely buggy. Last version I used was fine
(8.1.3.6). This is typical of Vuescan so if you find a stable version
hang on to it.

Vuescan has always worked well for my Nikon LS4000, through every version I've used.
Now running Mac G4, OSX 10.3.8, and Vuescan 8.1.40, but started way back with OS9 and
whatever was the then-current Vuescan version. No problems with OS updates or Vuescan
updates at any point along the way. Any reported bugs seem to be addressed by Ed
Hamrick almost immediately--have you reported this one?

Ed quickly fixed version 8.1.4 of Vuescan. Working perfectly again
with the 3200 scanner. Very impressive service and an excellent
product. Has anyone evaluated the new "Make gray from...R, G, B, IR"
feature? I've been using it with the green channel only, but haven't
tested to see if there are any significant differences when scanning
B&W negatives.

It really depends on your scanner. I use it all the time on my Artixscan
120tf. A composite of all three channels looks really bad on this
scanner. Before this feature was implemented in Vuescan I always had to
scan as RGB and extract the channel myself.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
