Moab Kokopelli Photo Gloss Paper & Epson 2200

2005-03-15 by Owen P. Evans

Hi everyone,
Since this paper got a rave review in the Photoshop magazine from NAPP, I
thought it would be worth trying.
I ordered and received some 8.5 x 11 sheets of the Moab, Kokopelli Photo
Gloss Paper (KPGP) from Inkjet Goodies.
I downloaded and installed the icm file for my 2200 and proceeded to set-up
Photoshop CS so as to print a colour 8 x 10.
As the print emerged, I could see a very stunning photo developing. Alas,
not all went well hereafter.
First of all, compared to my usual glossy paper from Tetenal; Ilford and
Epson; the KPGP offered deeper, richer colour and saturation was
outstanding. This paper was winning hands down over all my previous prints
of a test photo I made years ago. I was salivating to produce some B&W
prints.This never happened.
The KPGP would not finish in the 2200. That is to say, an 8 x 10 printed to
about 8 x 9.8 inches and then the paper shifted in the printer thus causing
the last 0.2 inches to smear and print incorrectly.
I tried several settings, no help. I went back to my regular paper with no
problems at all??
I contacted Inkjet Goodies and Moab with this information:

"At the end of the print, the paper shifts and a couple of black lines come
out on each print. It appears that the paper is not remaining still while
the last two passes of the printhead occur. I repeated the effort with
different images; with hi-speed on and off; with perceptual and saturation
settings and the song remains the same! I went back and printed the images
with Tetenal (163 lb. paper ) and Ilford and no problems. I went through
every diagnostic; the 2200 is perfect. "

and this is the advice that they gave me:

"We have consulted with the makers of Moab Paper for a solution to the
problem you are experiencing. It's possible that the kokopelli papers are
not as flat as the others, so while it's exiting the printer, it may be
putting an upward pressure on the last few centimetres. This would cause
the paper to catch any ink that may have accumulated under the print
carriage. The best way to solve this is to raise the catching tray a few
inches. You can either hold it, or put something under the paper tray that
will lift it at least 4-6 inches. The only other possible solution is that
you are printing borderless, and in that case it may also be catching the
printhead while it's moving back and forth. If this is the case there may
not be anything you can do other than not printing borderless. Please let
us know if you have any further questions, thanks! "

Well, I tried what they said and to no avail. I was not printing borderless
prints. I told them and no response for a couple of weeks now.

After 10-15 wasted sheets, I gave up and went back to my normal workflow &
materials. I never got a complete print!! And, I gave the paper to a friend
who has an Canon printer. If he has more success than I, I'll let everyone
know. As for you other 2200 users who may be contemplating the use of KPGP;
good luck!

Sincerely,
Owen Evans

I initially had a similar problem with my R800 when printing using small
margins. What was happening was that when the paper left the control of
the rollers behind the head, its weight caused the trailing edge to lift
slightly and the head touched the paper. The front rollers weren't capable
of keeping it located properly, causing it to shift and producing the blur
you're also seeing. Holding the front of the paper up (by lifting the
tray) cured the problem. Perhaps the Moab paper is more "slippery" than
your usual stock and so more prone to this effect?

Richard

Hello Richard,
Thankyou for the input. This is almost exactly what I am describing,
happened. I used some masking tape to cause the paper to remain located
properly by raising the catch tray but to no avail. I actually tried to keep
the paper in line using my hand; no luck.
Frustration caused me to pack it in.

Owen

Hello Richard,
No, I didn't know the name. I was trying to work through the folks at Inkjet
Goodies and I assumed they contacted the correct folks at Moab. However,
I'll give it a try.
Thanks,
Owen
