Skin tones and C86 Sliders

Skin tones and C86 Sliders

2005-04-16 by Scott McLoughlin

I'm staring at some skin tones on an arm. Light is low and even (living
room). Skin tone is caucasion, but tanned. I'm printing on EEM, and
there's a ton (relatively) of contrast in this arm/wrist. It's also
relatively
too bright compared to the monitor.

I've futzed with the brightness/contrast sliders quite a bit. They have
a good effect on some other parts of the photo - a dark shoe, some
jeans, a white radiator and whiter television screen. But the skin's
midtones seem to change only slightly, and retain a rather contrasty
appearance on the print that's not on the screen.

I also futzed with my monitor settings, to see if I could duplicate the
contrasty arm/wrist on the print. No go. Even with B0% and C100%,
the skin tone retains a relatively tan/dark/smooth low contrast appearance
on the screen.

So my question. Might I profiftably futz with the CMY sliders to somehow
adjust midtone contrast? If so, where might my trials begin? In this
photo,
the hand is pretty much the subject of the photograph.

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,

I outline what I've found with respect to the sliders at
Http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm .

If the 90% - 95% contrast is too low, consider moving the Yellow to -25 and
Cyan to +25. As to the CMY sliders, that is about all I found very useful.

In addition to the other sliders, the gamma setting is also relevant. Gamma
2.2 prints darker than Gamma 1.8.

If you are using Photoshop you might consider implementing the soft-proofing
procedure outlined at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Monitor-Profiling.htm .

There was a major thread here discussing my exploration of other ways to
achieve a monitor-to-print match, and I came back to this method, which I've
been using for a long time, as the best way to go.

Hope this helps.
