Photorag 188 and 308gsm

2005-04-26 by Andy

I hope this hasn't been addressed recently, but other than the "feel"
of weight, has anyone noticed any difference in the print quality
between 188 and 308gsm? I wouldn't expect there to be any
differences......but we know about assumptions.....

ABSOLUTELY! I'll spare all the tedious details, but there are definite
differences between the two. I exclusively use 308 now.

Hey...I'll take the tedious details...or at least -- why did you
choose one over the other?

the short story: I used to proof on 308 in 8.5x11 sheets and make bigger
prints on the 188 (since I sell nearly everything framed). I could not
consistently get the 308 and 188 to print the same, usually with the 188
showing a marked decrease in contrast and with overall lighter shadows. Jim
Doyle of Shades of Paper (I highly recommend him) addressed this with
Hahnemuhle and they took back some of my paper without questions. They
pretty much acknowledge these differences.

I no longer use 188gsm :)
