MIS C84/C86 Refillable Cartridges and Ink Puddling

MIS C84/C86 Refillable Cartridges and Ink Puddling

2005-06-17 by Bob Marsolais

Apparently the volume of ink that can be held in the MIS refillable
carts for the C84 and c86 is less than the Epson-brand cartridge. I
say this because two times today I have had puddling of ink on the
media start in the middle of a print job. Each time the color ink
that was puddling was from a cartridge that was clearly empty
(these are clear carts) but had an status monitor ink level
between one half and one quarter full. Since I was monitoring the
printing while in progress, I caught the puddling just as it
started. Not enough ink was on the media to explain the discrepancy
between actual and indicated ink levels.

I have also noticed on previous occasions that the filling chamber
was almost empty when the status monitor indicated between one half
and one third more ink remaining. When filling, I have followed
MIS's instructions concerning ink volume (12-13 ml for color).

Because of this, I would suggest to all users that they check the ink
remaining in these carts when the status monitor indicates half
empty. Apparently, when the ink level goes below the level of
the "gate" between the two sides of the cart, that breaks the vacuum
between the two sides allowing excessive ink flow.

Also, this may explain some of the "leaking carts in C84/C86's" we've
seen on this forum.

Thank you for this warning. I just received 3 cartridges of BO from
MIS to try out on the C86 when the printer arrives, and immediately
noticed that the filled cartridges looked pretty small, though I
hadn't seen the true C86 Epson cartridges yet as the printer has not
arrived.

On a different subject (please forgive me for interupting the thread )
that just dawned on me, how do B&W prints turn out if you use BO with
just the supplied pigment Epson black cartridge? How much different
are these than BO with MIS Eboni? I was thinking of trying this
initially to see how the printer works before voiding the warranty
with MIS inks.

Thank you.

Assuming the C86 uses the same cartridges as the C84, the black
cartridge can be either the same skinny size as the color carts or a
double wide (my C84 printers - I'm on my third one now - all came with
the double wide black cart.) I tried BO with the Epson ink when I first
got a C84 and really liked the results. MIS Eboni is a bit cooler than
the Epson black, but when I set up my CIS for the EZ inks I actually
balanced the EZ inks to more closely match the warmth of the Epson BO
print (EZ Warm in the Magenta position did it for me.) I do think the
EZ prints are a bit smoother than the BO prints, but if I were made of
money it would have been a real temptation to just keep buying Epson
black cartridges and printing BO with them.

Enjoy the experience when the C86 arrives. It's a terrific little
output device for B&W prints.

Cheers,
Kip
