To Kipduff: Varnishing, deep silver 3D look etc.

2005-06-26 by Ukko Heikkinen

Hello Kipduff

I have varnished my 2100 EEM and Hawk Mountian Merlin Photo prints with
ordinary "indoor" acrylic varnish with "enhanced UV protection". It is
intended for indoor walls, furniture etc., colorless, glossy, semimatte or
matte, does not turn yellow in the course of timne, can be applied on
pigment prints with a brush and then smoothed and evened with a foam plastic
roller, available at every hardware store, cheap.

These prints are the nearest to your "dried on a ferotype (gloss): deep
silver 3D look", for which I also strive for, that I have been able to make,
and very near at that.

The varnish deepens the blacks considerably, so much, as a matter of fact,
that if I'd want to varnish my 2400 matte prints I should make them somewaht
lighter and less contrasty. On the other hand, the 2400 "Warm" prints on
fine matte papers look so great, "platinutm", without varnish that I think
I'll skip that in the future.

The trade name of the varnish is "Natura". (BTW, I have tried also Golden
varnish, but Natura is better). Here is the home page of the manufafacturer:

Undoubtedly you shoud be able to find something similar in your local
harware store.

And yes, "gloss inkjet media looks horible"

Ukko:
Thanks for the reply! How many coats does it take? The EEM seems to
drink endlessly. I'll try it- too late today. How do you mount them
(I assume they're mounted)? I was thinking of using my Seal dry mount
press- does the varnish affect the mounting?

Kip.
