Repost of FSN curve creation

Repost of FSN curve creation

2005-06-28 by Johnny Eades

I've discovered a full set of MIS FSN (NOT ut2-fsn) inks and have
created a paper curve (neutra) for EEM paper. There was a question I
need an answer to about the curve creation. I designate all the inks as
gray inks (none as toner)and print the calibration steps--read with my
densitometer and calculate the percentages of ink laydown for each
one. Then I linearize the readings. There still seems to be something
wrong in that the high values (Zones VI-VIII) are still too dark on the
print. Any suggestions?

Hello Johnny,

Is it possible you print your initial test target with some
linearization values carried over from your earlier version of the
profile? If this is not the case, have you tried converting your image
to a QTR gray matte/photo profile prior to printing?

Hello Nick,

I reviewed the paper curve information I had, and reread all the
densities on the ink calibration chart printed at 75% (darkest black)
and got the same numbers. I then redid the curves and linearization
(the old lines were deleted before doing this) and printed an image
which had been converted to LAB Matte using the files from Roy as
gray workspace/printspace. The result was still too light compared to
a UT2 paper curve created using the same method. I now am thinking I
need to change the gamma on QTR to print a darker midtone section.

This is the .quad file information that appears to look OK. One thing
I do need to understand is if any of the inks need to be designated
as Toners or not. If so which ones?

PS. I just printed the image using =5 gamma and it looks much better.
What a difference just that one single adjustment makes. Hooray, now
I can use that old ink and not throw it away.
