Gretag Eye Ones being blown out Cheeeeap!

2005-07-05 by lulalake_1999

I posted this elsewhere but . . .

I don't know if anyone's aware of this but the Gretag Macbeth Eye-One
monitor calibration kit is being blown out for around 60 bucks.

I got one here

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4027168 (They are
avalable elsewhere for similar prices)

I then went to the Gretag Macbeth website and downloaded the Match 3.2
software, which allows a bit more options.

Works like a charm. It's a Monitor only calibration device but if one
needs it, it's a major deal. They are down from 299USD or so.

Cheers

Jules

Jules,

Thanks for the "heads-up". I just ordered one and then downloaded
3.2a from the Getrag web-site.

Alwaysanted one but didn't want to pay $250 for it.

At $60, the price is right!

Scott

Just snagged one myself. Thanks to those who did the software
update/compatibility research.

You can also get Match to use the more detailed PM 5 reference file.

Eye One Display 1 vs Display 2 (was Re: Gretag Eye Ones being blown out Cheeeeap!)

2005-07-06 by Sam McCandless

J&R says the Gretag Macbeth Eye One Display 1 does both LCDs and CRTs.

Is that right, and does it do LCDs as well as the newer Eye One
Display 2 does them?

Was that what the research was about?

Thanks.

Eye One Display 1 vs Display 2 (was Re: Gretag Eye Ones being blown out Cheeeeap!)

Yes it will do LCDs *however* in order to do so you must use the
Match 3.2 software, not the software supplied with the package.

It's OK because the Match 3.2 is a free download from the Gretag
Mcabeth website.

Eye One Display 1 vs Display 2 (was Re: Gretag Eye Ones being blown out Cheeeeap!)

2005-07-06 by scott_now_coming

This from DryCreek Photo:

http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/monitor_calibration_tools.htm

GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display (original version): The Eye-One Match
3.0 software is compatible with both the Eye-One One and the Eye-One
Two. Aside from silly naming conventions, the original Eye-One
Display held its own. Overall, the original Eye-One Display rates a
notch below the Spyder2. It generally surpassed the Spyder2 in
dealing with extreme highlights as colors faded to white. Owners of
the original Eye-One Display hardware should download the free
upgrade to Match 3.0.

The GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display 2 is a good performer. Overall
color performance is excellent. The calibration options are not as
extensive as those of the Optix XR or Spyder2. If your monitor is DDC-
enabled, the Eye-One Match 3 software performs the necessary monitor
adjustments automatically (Mac only for now - Windows capability
is "coming soon"). The fast speed, particularly on CRT monitors,
makes for quick and painless calibration and profiling. A drawback
for CRT use is the suction cups used to attach the instrument to the
screen. These are not durable, and you will end up needing to dangle
the puck from the top of the monitor or get creative with gaffer's
tape.

Update: the Match 3.0 is now Match 3.2 and yes the suction cups are
silly. I just tilted my monitor back a bit and the puck sits fine on
the surface.

Yes they are silly, but are an intelligent design technique to reduce stray
ambient light getting to the sensors.

I'm sure one could always put a piece of duct tape across it and
around the monitor, if need be.

The suction cups are a non-issue, imo.

I would say overengineered, but who cares, it works.

I believe one difference is that Eye-One Display 2 does ambient light measurement.
