New HPR Satin ???

New HPR Satin ???

2005-07-10 by Tom OConnell

The Lexjet folks touted me on a box of the new Hahnemuhle Photo Rag
Satin... sounds good... basically Photo Rag with a coating that means
no flaking (true) and the same output as HPR.

Then they sent me several emails from happy users in another hype...

I'm getting lots of metamerism and bronzing... It does look great when
viewed only head on and the coating is fantastic.

I"m using Epson 2200 and 4000 with OEM inks and Image Print.

Anyone else used this yet and have any thoughts? successes???

cheers,

Tom O'Connell

I'm waiting for other dealers to be able to sell it before I try it.

I have used it with Imageprint 6 and their new Photo
Rag Satin profile. Looks good vis a vis bronzing and
metamerism. Not sure however if I like the overall
look. Much warmer paper than photorag.

Tom,

I've been using the HPR Satin with QTR, 4000, and MIS UC inks. I'm
generally pleased with the prints (neutral and sepia) and I see no
bronzing or metamerism at all. This paper needs a lot of ink (limits
are 1.5x greater than regular HPR) to get a decent dmax (I get 1.7
-1.8) and you need to use the MK ink because PK gives a low dmax.
Also, watch out for ink rub-off while this paper is drying (takes a
good 3 days to completely cure). I put the QTR profiles on my
filesharing site for anyone who wants to try them. Note that I was
using the MIS UT7 LK ink in place of regular LK so you may have to
adjust the LC and LM inks to tune the neutrality if you are using the
Epson UC inks. Also, the profiles settings are for printing at 2880
dpi, better mode, matte ink.
There are two profiles (neutral and sepia) in a zip archive in the
HPR Satin folder on my filesharing site:

I have been trying this paper with piezotone inks and IP6 on an Epson 7000
-- it took quite a bit of manipulation to get good prints. Essentially I had
to change the ink limits to 300% (thanks to a note from Carl) which,
according to the folks at image print is not supposed have any effect.

Anyway, I am luckily covered by a maintenance agreement and Colorbyte made
new profiles and I am now getting good prints. Not sure if it was worth the
trouble, I do like the look of regular Photo Rag. I don't have a problem
with metamerism or bronzing but the sheen does seem lower the apparent Dmax
when viewed at an angle.

I am just getting ready to try a BW print on an Epson 7600 with IP6, Epson
Ultrachrome ink and a profile provided by the folks at Lexjet.

Wendel

Imageprint now has a profile for Hahnemuhle Photo
Satin available at their site. It is located in the
new version 6 folder for matte black.
