Print Mounting Materials

2005-07-12 by Scott Holt

When mounting prints made with MIS UT7 inks, is it best to use buffered
or unbuffered materials. I had not really thought much about it until I
read remarks on one vendor's web site implying that unbuffered
materials might be best for use with traditial color prints because of
possible color shifts caused by interactions between dyes and buffering
agents. Is there an issue with modern inkjet inks such as the UT7 or
Epson Ultrachrome inks?

I use buffered materials -- paper and mounting board. The old caution about
buffering seemed to apply to color print dyes. I have not seen any evidence
that the pigments we use do worse on buffered papers or when exposed to
buffered matte board. While EEM is acidic and does very well, UltraSmooth
is buffered and does better.

Additionally, air-borne acids are attacking the non-buffered materials --
like my old un-mounted silver prints. The old prints on buffered matte
boards seem to be doing better. The buffering in the matte boards may well
be capturing the air-borne acids before they reach the un-buffered silver
print paper base.
