QuadToneRIP Licensing

QuadToneRIP Licensing

2005-08-03 by Roy Harrington

I've been away for almost a week so I've just caught up with the licensing discussion
that has been going on here. Since the GNU General Public License is involved and I
don't want to step on their toes any more that having someone step on mine, the wording
of the license is important. What I have been using seemed to work pretty well but lately
seems to have caused some confusion and mis-interpretation of my intent.

I've rewritten it and been more explicit of my intent. This is not meant as a change in
intent just a clarification of what I had all along. All in all its a fairly straighforward and
flexible agreement. It currently just depends on the honor system of paying the fee.
This is the most hassle free for everyone involved for now.

Thanks,
Roy

QuadToneRIP Black & White Printing Software
Shareware Copyright (C) 2005 Roy V. Harrington Photography

The QuadToneRIP product has multiple pieces of code. The low level drivers for the Epson
printers are based on Gimp-Print Open Source Project. This Gimp-Print code is licensed
under the GNU General Public License. The rest of code for the QuadToneRIP product
including Quad Tone Profiling, ICC profiling, installers and user interface are all
proprietary work. Any usage of any piece of the QuadToneRIP product is considered usage
of QuadToneRIP. In other words whether you are just printing, just using the ICC profiler
or just using any of the profiles supplied you will be using some of the proprietary
software.

All of the proprietary pieces of the QuadToneRIP product i.e. other than the Gimp-Print
code are bundled together and licensed as a Shareware product. You are free to download
and try the product. It is a fully operational product, there are no disabled parts or
dongles. If it meets your needs and you want to use any pieces for your regular workflow,
please pay a shareware fee of fifty dollars $50. At the present time there is no registration
but this is subject to change. This fee can be applied per user so one user can use as may
printers as he/she wants, or the fee can be applied per printer so one printer can be used
by many users. The fee will also entitle you to any bug-fix updates. Profiles distributed
here are included and others are free to swap and distribute profiles without restriction.

This software is provided 'as-is', without any express or implied warranty. In no event will
the authors be held liable for any damages arising from the use of this software.

Before the pitchfork and torch bearing mob turns up at my door ... I've ammended the
description of QTR that I used in the original review, just as I said I would, if I had clarification
from Roy. :-) :-)

My thanks to Roy also for the clarification, and to Keith for the
amendment. And my apologies to one and all for any acrimony my
initial bluntness might have triggered.
