UT-FSN compared to VM-N

UT-FSN compared to VM-N

2005-08-10 by Mark Hahn

I am going to try out one of the UT inksets and was hoping some kind
soul out there would be willing to send me a scrap of a sample that
shows the UT-FSN output. How does it compare to the old VM neutral
results? Personally, I thought that the VM neutral had a little of
a "paint" feel to it compared to the rich pigment look of the
medium/warm tone output from VM. Contact me off-list if you are
willing to puts something/anything in the mail for me (I'd offer to
pay, but there really isn't much of a cost to send out a scrap off a
mess-up...) I'd also appreciate comments comparing the UT-FSN to the
VM-N as well. Otherwise... I guess I'll just go the safe route and buy
some UT-FS to try first since I feel more confident that I know what to
expect.

Thanks in advance!

It depends on the paper. With EEM it's a bit cool; on PhotoRag, it should
be "neutral" (C = Y) with a slight "selenium" look (M elevated 0.01 density
unit).

The UT-FS and UT-FSN inks can be mixed to get the tone you're after.

Thanks Paul! But I don't quite understand the reply. I have results
from the original VM neutralinks/curves, am I to understand that on EEM
the UT-FSN will be cooler than the VM-N was? If I go with the UT-FSN I
would probably be printing on Moab Entrada Bright White or Natural if I
went with the UT-FS. From my VM experience, I found that the MW or W
curves didn't nessacrily work better, but that the warm tone made for a
much more forgiving print when it came to posterization etc... in truth
I'd prefer a harsher neutral print if my 1160 is capable of producing
smooth gradients with no posterizations using the UT-FSN inkset.

Actually, I'm not totally sure about the original VM-N curve. That was made
before I had the spectrophotometer, so I'm not sure it's really neutral.
Suffice it to say that on EEM UT-FSN is a bit cool.
