Noise reduction

2005-08-12 by Ted Shaw

G'day -

I'm looking for recommendations for a good noise reduction application. Has anyone found something better than the popular Noise Ninja? Just thought I'd ask before buying.

Many thanks,

Ted

Ninja is great, it's what I use. But you might want to look at
Noiseware, I was very impressed in demo mode.
At a certain point it might have more to do with which one you feel
best with the interface. Performance may be somewhat equal.

Of what I have tested, NeatImage is fairly amazing:

...works as a plugin and allows masking.

Like most things in life though, in the end there is no magic...

All this anecdotal stuff about noise reduction is fine, but if you want
something a little more meaty, you might be interested in looking at this:

Obviously, you could spend more than a little time there if you felt
like it....

Trial versions of just about every noise reduction method are
available, and I would strongly recommend trying at least a couple of
different approaches. The two pieces of software already recommended
seem quite similar to me in their result, and *very* good when strong
noise reduction is needed. Good results can also be obtained by
selective blurring tools - including the Avanced Sharpening tool in
Picture Windows Pro. This tends to give a different look from the
dedicated NR software, and is quite easy to use when moderate noise
reduction suffices. (It works for me, even on my noisiest camera -
K.M. A2 with its atrocious pattern noise at ISO 400.)

As usual taste/artistic choice is of prime importance. Too much noise
reduction can make the result appear soft even when it is not## - the
eye (at least mine) seems to like some fine residual texture to grab
on to. This may correspond, at least in part, to the frequent use of
the word "plastic" to describe the results of too agressive noise
reduction. I found it quite hard to tame the dedicated NR tools, but
that may be a comment on the user rather than the tools!

The best way to judge is to compare prints at your normal image
magnification for a range of subject types that you do. As with the
closely related issue of sharpening, there is no universal answer.

Good luck!

Ken

## - compare this effect with the difference between of Black Only,
referred to as digital tri-x, and smoother printing methods, or even
with original tri-x which although grainy gave many good looking
images where the grain did not dominate.

G'day -

Just a note to thank those who took the time to help me with the noise application decision.

Much appreciated.

Best,

Ted

I just purchased Noise Ninja and found the result to be excellent. It didn't handle some really bad spots in some of my older photos before I figured out to avoid some of it in the shooting process but it made some model's faces look like they were photographed by someone who actually knew what they were doing.

Canon 20D. In this particular photo, ISO 200. I applied NN then layered it with the original and wiped off all but the skin. Someone referred to the look as plastic but I thought it made skin look great.
