Raw file conversion

2005-09-14 by Tim Timmermans

Well I went out and shot a bunch of 10D images in RAW forgetting that
I have PS7 and now I need to get to them but have no way to convert
them. Is there some kind of freeware out there that could give me
reasonable results. I've seen some companies offering trial downloads
but they put limitations on the converted files. Limiations like not
being able to edit anything with the image or import it into PS after
conversion.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Tim

Check out Rawshooter Essentials. The Canon software is pretty decent as
well.

The 10D shipped with two raw converters; if you've lost your original
product CD's, Canon's 10D download library can be found here:

If you are running on a Win 98 system (as I am), or Linux, RSE
won't work. Try UFRaw (Ufraw.sourceforge.net).

Thanks for the tips fellas.

I downloaded Rawshooter but I can't figure out how to import the
files. Right now they are in Zoombrowser. Are you guys saying that I
can convert in Zoombrowser? Is it possible I have an older version? It
will download the the RAW files from the camera to ZB but there is no
way to convert them to tif or jpeg for me to edit in PS7..

Right now, the files are somewhere in the file system of your hard drive
(they do not exist "in" Zoombrowser; it just shows you what is on the
drive, camera, or card it is looking at). There will be a .CRW and a
.THM file for each picture you have taken. You need to find these if you
plan to do anything with them with just about any software. In
Rawshooter Essentials, you just browse to the folder holding the files
using the folder tree in the Rawshooter program's main window.

I believe you can launch Canon's raw converter from Zoombrowser and I
believe it is as simple as double clicking the raw file in Zoombrowser,
or selecting "convert" from a menu.

Yes, though it isn't very relevant to the issue. Old versions worked
pretty much the same as newer versions. What you really need to do is
have a glance through the user manual until you are familiar with raw
file basics and know where Zoombrowser is putting the files after it
downloads them from the camera/card.

Duh!! I figured it out. Thanks. I'm WAY better with a camera than I am
with a computer.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
