Teacher - New to B&W injet printing

Teacher - New to B&W injet printing

2005-09-18 by Gary Strunk

Hey all, I'm a high school art teacher from Mo. and want to start some
inkjet B&W printing with my Digital Photo classes. I have a lab with
28 pcs - all networked. I see that the Epson site has a C86 for $89
and you get a free print server with it. What do you think? Is this a
good place to start? Please give me some pointers - ink, paper, etc.
Thanks.
Gary

Gary,

Best info for the C86 from Paul Roark.

The C86 is a great place to start. See the third subtitle in my index at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm.

You can often find C86s on sale for about $50.

One of the typical problems of inkjet printing is that the printers,
inksets, and papers may differ. The result may be a "ramp" (input value to
output density graph) that is not smooth and has flat spots on it. This is
where one sees "posterization" or just a lack of contrast. As such, the
ability to "linearize" the printers and get a good, even contrast
distribution is one key to good inkjet printing. The rips like QTR and IJC
have routines that make this at least semi-automatic if one has the right
equipment. If one is familiar with Photoshop curves, they can also be used
for this. I have a tutorial at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Monotone_Curves.htm that goes over the steps
one can use to make a monotone curve for adjusting a curve or making a
second curve to "linearize" an existing Photoshop curve. I think it might
be a good exercise for students to go through.
