Daniel,
I don't know that your post below has driven me to "defend" XP but I do want to say this:
The "not approved to work with XP" flag is a defalt which will come up when any software not previously tested by microsoft themselves on XP is installed. Basically it's a disclaimer and has more of a legal purpose than anything else.
This then encourages software companies to provide microsoft with copies of their software for "official" standards and compatibility testing.
One of the ways XP will continue to be as "stable" as it's touted to be is this "preflight" check giving the software makers any potential compatibility bugs in their programs and the opportunity to fine-tune / port to XP. This is just being responsible.
I have a good friend who designs and builds websites and he "pretests" them with every browser he can get his hands on including even "webtv" just to be sure he will not get called because of crashes/whatever when it could have been prevented beforehand.
