1280/UT2: heat/humidity?

1280/UT2: heat/humidity?

2005-09-20 by Ben Rosengart

I've been having a lot of clogging problems with my 1280. Would
moving it into an air-conditioned room to reduce the heat and
humidity be likely to help, hurt, or have no effect at all?

Thanks.

I use Media Street OEM Compatible Plug-n-Play inks on my four 890s and
one 1280 all with CIS. In my experience my printers love humidity and
don't particularly care about temperature. I'm in humid Maryland and
printing is best starting in March through Oct or whenever I close the
windows. No A/C here - I'm surprised wife hasn't pulled my plug long
ago.

Darn. I was hoping winter might improve things.

Heh.

Thanks for the info.

Ben,

If there has ever been dye in the printer, rinse the parking pads off.
Eboni doesn't like dye. My first old 1280 had lots of clogs until I
thoroughly rinsed the parking pad.

The higher the humidity the better. It's the drying out of the inks that
causes problems.

Thanks. I bought it new and never so much as unsealed the Epson
cartridges. Is there any chance that Epson ran dye through it for
quality control or burn-in or anything like that?

BTW, the problem is with PKN as well as Eboni. And it's weird -- last
night I was getting great BO prints, but this morning I couldn't.

Should I try to clean the nozzles? I have both "cleaning solution"
and "nozzle fluid" on order from MIS, but I'm not quite sure what I'm
supposed to do when they get here. :-) I think I also may have made
a mistake in not buying a cleaning cartridge too ...

When I first got involved with inkjet printers I heard that Epson shipped
the new dye printers with a preservative in the heads that was best removed
with the OEM Epson dyes. I have no idea if this is true.

You need to put dye ink carts in there and see if your problem goes
away. If so, the problem is in the cart. If not, ONLY THEN you can
conclude it's a problem with the head clogging. You must do that to
see if you want to address a cart or a head problem.

I see no problems in going back and forth from dye to pigment inks.
I've done it lots of times in several 1280's and an old 890. Clean the
dye ink off the parking pad as Paul suggested. Others think it's not
necessary but it doesn't hurt and is easy.

I also agree with everyone else, printers love humidity and temp just
does not seem to be a factor so long as it's in the range you would
live in.

Thanks Christer, but I live in New York City -- there is absolutely no
lack of humidity here in the summer.
