Re: printing with Epson ICC profiles (latest)

Thanks for the feedback.

By converting Grayscale to QTR Matte Black ICC in Photoshop I'm getting deep blacks now. The image now shows as RGB with 16-bit depth.

The problem is that compared to BO, QTR output is putting out LOTS of ink to the point that the print is damp in the black areas. This can't be right. This is definitely exaggerating the banding affect that I posted about earlier.

The BO and QTR prints are now very close in density but some detail in the shadows is lost in the QTR print I think simply due to the volumn of ink on the paper.

Again, I'm using an Epson 2200, UC inks, Kayenta paper.

BO is still my best option but perhaps some has some idea about the excessive ink issue.

David

It is not the black that is changing. The ICC profile does not alter the
maximum black that the printer produces. It does alter the image pixel
values to Perceptual[ly] fit the image in lower dynamic range of your ink on
matte paper. The end points aren't altered but the points in between are.

You should not be getting excessive ink laid down at all. Are you sure you
are using a QTR curve appropriate for your printer? Remember that these
"curves" are responsible for telling the printer how much of which ink to
lay down where. Amongst other things they limit the inks at appropriate
levels. The curves are designed for a certain dpi setting (increasing the
dpi without a commensurate decrease in ink limits in the curve will cause
excessive ink.

Re the banding, just to confirm is it parallel to the passage of the print
head?

Cheers

You are probably using a profile that was created at 1440, with your printer
set to 2880. That’s OK, just cut the ink limit down to about 70%.

Are you printing at 1440 or 2880. If 2880, try 1440.

QTR Matte Black ICC was: Re: [Digital BW] Re: printing with Epson ICC profiles (latest)

2005-09-28 by Scott McLoughlin

Does QTR Matte Black ICC install automatically with the new
version of QTR?

If indeed it is an RGB ICC profile, as David's indicates, I believe
I should be seeing it in PWP Transform->Color->Convert, but I don't.

Thanks.

Scott
