"Phatte" black with Epson 4800... with QTR?

"Phatte" black with Epson 4800... with QTR?

2005-11-19 by John Broski

Hello All,

I was fascinated to learn that the IP RIP allows you to run both matte and
photo blacks in the 4800 at the same time (replacing the light-light-K with
a rechipped matte K cartridge). This would fix the only thing I don't love
about my 4800... switching the K inks. But the IP RIP is expensive.

Does anyone know if QTR (which I've never used) would allow similar magic to
be done?

The "phatte" (PHoto/mATTE) option is discussed here:

Sorry if this has been discussed before... first I've seen of it. Thanks!

John B.

Since they have long argued there is no need for more than 2 blacks,
it's no wonder they downplay Epson going to 3, and come up with this,
admittedly, convenient solution for people who want to use both photo
and art papers.
Many, incuding myself, might disagree with them, and the proof is in
the prints.

And in my opinion they chose a very poor way to implement
this "improvement".

And to answer the question, QTR will not allow you to print color
while having both matte and photo black installed.
