There's really no direct way of defining what non-neutral tones are in this
non-ICC system. But you can print a profiling target at a given set of
settings, and build a color profile for that setup, then use that profile to softproof
those settings. As long as you could repeat the settings, the proof profile
would remain valid. There would probably be some editing required to get that
profile to be close enough. The ColorVision profiling engine has always done a
surperior job of building preview profiles for B&W systems, so I assume it
would be a good choice here as well. Guess I'll have to fire up a K3 printer
and see what PrintFIX PRO will do in terms of K3 SoftProof profiles.

Rejean - yes there is. If you have a spectrophotometer such as an EyeOne,
you can (and should) use QTR Create ICC to profile the output of Epson Adv
B&W at each of your favourite settings. You can use the ICC profile that's
created to give you full colour soft proofing and luminance management when
printing. I would not use the approach described below because it doesn't
help you with luminance management when you actually go to print.

You would have to build differing print-preview profiles at differing
luminance slider settings to contol that with standard printer profiles of the type
I'm describing. There are also viewing light luminance and temperature color
settings that could be used in preview matching...

When I say luminance management I mean a luminance managed (single axis
colour managed) workflow. QTR Create ICC creates what one might call a
lopsided ICC profile. For the soft proofing leg there is full colour
information. On the PCS to Device leg there is only luminance axis
management. The profiles are used for soft proofing AND for printing, in
like manner to a full colour managed workflow. One creates a profile for
each set of Adv B&W parameters. Of course there are an infinite number of
combinations but most settle on a few quite quickly. In addition, the
light/dark and other luminance axis variables in the driver are redundant.
Pick one set and stick with them. Better to edit in PS than in the driver.
