Assign Profile / Convert to Profile

Assign Profile / Convert to Profile

2006-01-30 by Richard Smallfield

Hello,
I'm not quite clear about whether I should be using Assign profile or Convert to profile when using Grey Lab.icc - can someone please explain when to use which option?

thanks,
Richard

You would use assign in a situation where you might have a scan let's
say that you know is in the Adobe1998 color space but when the file
comes into Photoshop it isn't tagged with a profile so knowing what
color space the file is in you assign Adobe1998 to the file in
Photoshop.

You would use convert to profile when you are taking an image that is
in one color space and wish to change it to another color space.

Richard

Remember this:

ASSIGN keeps the numbers and changes the colour
CONVERT changes the numbers and keeps the colour

Another way of thinking about it is the profile is a dictionary that gives
meaning in one language for the set of characters in a word. Pull out a
different dictionary and those same characters have a different meaning in
that different language. If you want to express the same meaning in another
language you have to convert the characters into another word which has the
same/right meaning in the new language.

Converting between colour profiles keeps the look of the image the same and
is generally what you'd use the most. Assigning a new profile would change
the look of your image.
