Silver Rag and Wet Ink

Silver Rag and Wet Ink

2006-02-01 by Stephen M Martin

As are many of you, I am using the untried Crane Silver Rag. This morning I
made a gallery poster for a show I have and printed it on the silver rag. It
was in RGB but was put through all the usual stuff to mute the color. I use
an Epson 4000 and used the IP profile. When the paper emerged, the photo
part of the print smudged. (The line around it and the name had no problem).
As I let it sit, I rubbed it to see if it was drying and it remains sticky
to the touch. It feels like the ink is just piled up. My question is whether
anyone else has experienced a problem with this paper and the UC inks.

There's an IP profile for this paper already?

I'll answer my own post. It was a manufacturing problem. If anyone else has
dealt with Crane, then you know they return calls and are a big help.

I'm beta testing the silver rag and printing on a 7800 with Imageprint Silver Rag profiles.
The ink should be dry to the touch when the print emerges...not sticky at all. I have
actually soaked one of these prints in water after 24 hours drying time, and you can't rub
any ink off
the saturated paper. However it takes a while for the ink to set.....if i run a freshly printed
image under water no ink washes off, but if I rub the recent print after I wet it, ink will rub
off. Ink shouldn't smudge under normal circumstances when it comes out of the printer
however. Eleanor

I hope you wern't using matte black?

I didn't even have rub off using the Cone K6 pigments, but did have
very bad gloss diff which I expeced with a matte black carbon pigment.

I am currently testing with Ultrachome and K3 and will post my results
as soon as I make them available to Crane first as I promised. That
should be Monday. This trial is coming to an end and they should
release the stuff by mid Feb I imagine.

It almost sounds like the behavior of using MK instead of PK inks. But, that wouldn't affect the behavior of the color inks would it?
