Hi to all,
I had been reading recently some Clayton Johnes paper and got
interested in BO printing. However, I own a R2400 printer which daesnt
supporte it natively. How do I print BO in that case? Would QTR with a
profile where
only the Black ink is switched on solve the problem?
Thanks for your comments.

Unfortunately, that's not BO printing. Read, infact, the last section of the papr you mentioned Cheers --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "alanrew42" <Alan-Rew@...> wrote:

Presumably because it's not BO Printing? That's for printing using the Epson ABW software. I presume someone wants to use BO pritnign to get the punchy/slightly grainy "Tri-X" look it gives. Not one that I personally like, but it appeals to some (BTW there are a couple of 2400 profiles in QTR which work pretty well and give a slightly different look than the ABW) tim a

Hello Julian, >My R2400 Epson software has a setting for BLACK, under "print >settings">"color" . Now you have my curiosity up, but I can't find this. Can you describe in more detail where you see it? Many thanks. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm

Yo Clayton!{and everyone else out there}
Remembering I'm on a Mac, OS10.4.5, with the latest driver from the Epson site.
When I print,{command P} the first window has a pull down menu-default says"copies and
pages". Pull down to "printer settings" The next window, go to COLOR:choices are:Color/
Advanced B&W/ BLACK. I have the Image profile set for 20% dot gain, PS2 is managing
color, printer profile is 20% dot gain.
I've been working in ABW 'mode' and falling in love with Kayenta! Haven't
explored all the settings in the Epson driver,{been using a workflow from that guy Clayton}
Do you know where I can find a good set of instructions for the R2400? Not happy with the
one that came in the box. My issues are dumb things like paper not catching-not
feeding;controlling roll paper feed. Maybe I just need more time on the machine?
Thank You Clayton! You Rule!

Ok, understood. My PC version is nothing like this.

What happens when you choose BLACK?
>I've been working in ABW 'mode' and falling in love with Kayenta!
Yes, Kayenta is really nice paper, one of my favorites.

Who? Never heard of him.

No, sorry.
>My issues are dumb things like paper not catching-not feeding
I found that putting a slight bend in the stiff/thick papers helps it
feed into the jaws of the grabber easier. It also helps to give it a
firm but brief nudge to move it forward into the grabber - just a tiny
bit. Too much and it will be rejected and passed through.

Julian,
Guess what? I had the very same issue with paper not catching on my
2400. It drove me crazy. I called Epson tech support several times and
tried their suggestions. Only lightweight papers went thru the printer
easily.
Finally, they sent me a new printer and the issues disappered! Even
heavier weight papers fly thru just fine.
I suggest that you do the same. They are well aware that there are
issues with paper feeding and the 2400.
Good luck!
Howard

While they are very different printers, this sounds a lot like the issues that some of us had with the R800. I had to send the first one back as its paper feed drove me nuts. Epson sent me a new one which works well, but for the occasional time the gremlins decide to feed a sheet straight through without stopping for ink. Thanks, tried a bend, tried multiple sheets& prayer! I hope to chime in. I purchased a 7800 two weeks ago which has the latest 2.7 driver being run on Mac OSX 10.3. From reading on this forum, I was under the impression that there is no Black mode for the K3 printers. Well, there is a setting. I have the option of choosing Color, Advanced B&W, or Black. Out of curiosity, I printed one image under Black mode on Ilford Smooth Pearl paper. The result was a very warm print with good detail. Looks similar to the prints I would get when printing BO with my 4000. The image bronzes while the same print on Advanced B&W does not. Now I wonder whether the PK on the K3 inkset is actually the same as the old Ultrachromes. Maybe someone with more experience with the x800 printers can comment. Are you MAC or PC. I'm on a MAC and my driver has the Black setting. The question is what does it do. Anyone. Peter.

It says black but really still prints using all colors.

This has been discussed before. According to Epson it depends on the paper. On any decent photographic paper it uses all the grey/black inks.

Interesting that the 7800 "Black" driver option behaves differently compared to the same option in the 2400 driver. The latter produces a greenish black print and under magnification you can see CMY dots. Sounds like the 7800 is doing true BO.
