signing glossy prints - rapdiograph and eboni...?

2006-04-18 by Craig Snyder

As much as I like matte, I like the cost-effectiveness of the Kirkland Glossy, and with a new
R220 on it's way I'd like to set it up with Eboni PK and keep my 1280 dedicated to matte
paper.

I had an idea of buying a rapidiograph pen and filling it with Eboni PK instead of india ink,
or whatever you use in it. I can't remember but used to use one in art class back in the
70's.

Has anyone tried this, would it work fine?

I'm putting an order in with MIS soon for a 220 cart inkset and I will add a bulk bottle of
said ink if there is a positive response on this.

thanks,
Craig

For several years now I'm using the Staedtler Mars Matic 700
drafting pens for retouching. One is still filled with
Generations pigment black and the others are filled with MIS
pigment inks. Sizes 0.2 - 0.18 - 0.15 mm. You can't use them
for signing on matte papers (coating scrapes off etc), it may
be possible on gloss papers. Maybe a much thicker pen like
0.5 mm can be used for signing on matte papers, never tried
that and the artists here sign with a B4 pencil on matte
papers. For retouching it works perfect, ink is keeping better
in the pens than the drafting inks I used in the past.

Hi Craig;

I've been doing exactly this for my RC papers, in fact using the
same pens that Ernst is using. My favorite is the 00 size (.30mm,
but I don't reccomend using Eboni, it will look much too black, and
will rub off. Try an LK, perhaps even thinned out a bit with
distilled water (or base fluid if you have it)to get a grey that
looks more like pencil.

The drafting people weren't smart enough to add glycol/glyerine to keep the points from
drying so fast. ;-)
